Caught a couple of decent films on my flight yesterday that I hadn’t got around to watching previously.

The Holdovers - very very good indeed.

American Fiction - very cleverly done

I also watched some awful stuff too 😂

Kong x Godzilla (lasted 25 mins!)

Drive-Away Dolls - worst thing ever to come from a Cohen brother.

The River Wild - cheap, updated reboot but probably best of the bad bunch!

Enjoyed it a lot.

It falls short of X and (especially) Pearl but it's still a very well made movie and Ti West now has imo one of the strongest horror trilogies ever on his CV.

The 80s horror influences are evident, with many of the more violent scenes delving into Giallo territory.

Mia Goth is terrific as usual and hats off to Kevin Bacon for devouring every scene with slimy gusto.

Good stuff.

Pretty much my thoughts on it as well, it was more of an 80s style thriller than a horror but I love the way that each film completely switches up the style and genre.

I struggle to pick between X and Pearl as a favourite, I think that I prefer X because it is more of a straight up slasher while Pearl is difficult to pinpoint what subgenre it would fall into, I loved both of them though.

Maxxxine is the bottom of the 3 but still a great movie and one that I'll be buying on bluray and rewatching a few times.

@Designer1 have you seen Infinity Pool with Mia Goth and what were your thoughts on it? I thought she was great in that as well but there was one scene (where she is sitting on a car) and was just wailing and shouting and my god her voice grated on me.

I've been watching some of my favourites with my youngest recently (they're a huge movie fan but have some fairly large gaps in their watch list due to age) and there's nothing better than getting a positive reaction from a recommendation.

Tonight's movie is for me Jack Nicholsons best role in Polanskis Chinatown.

It's a timeless classic Noir with a dark undertone and beautifully written characters.

If there's anyone reading who hasn't seen it, then I recommend you do asap.

Anyone got thoughts on Alien: Romulus? It's coming to the UK on the 16th August.  I love Alien and Aliens, sadly the other films have been a bit meh.

I’ve kind of had my fill of them to be honest. I can still watch Alien 1, 2 and 3 when on TV but not really fussed with anything else.

However, if it was space marines having an all mighty winner takes all showdown with aliens again, I might be more interested.

Flying from the UK to Orlando - it was approx 9 hours so had time to watch a few things!

Seriously though, avoid Drive Away Dolls.

Yes, loved Nebraska and enjoyed both The Descendants and Downsizing.

Shame he hasn’t done that much so far.

Election for the win for me! Sideways and About Schmitt also 👍👍

Downsizing is the only film of his that I’ve yet to see

Touched on a few pages back, but a stripped-back genre effort could be a shot-in-the-arm to the series (akin to Prey and Predator), and I'd largely trust Álvarez to deliver on such a remit.  Nothing fancy and lean into the body horror, all the noise coming out about practical effects/minimal green-screening sounds promising too.  My original worry was that it had Scott's "blessing" (see previous rants about him shit-canning Blomkamp's concept so he could fart out whatever the **** Prometheus and Covenant were meant to be) but seemingly no more involvement beyond that so I'm optimistic.  From the trailers alone, they've at least nailed the visual styles of both 1 and 2.
