Designer1 Posted April 4, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted April 4, 2013 Roger Ebert died BBC Sad news. Didn't always agree with his reviews (but that's part of being a reviewer I suppose) but definitely one of the last great movie critics.
Chindie Posted April 4, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted April 4, 2013 Read a lot of Ebert reviews over the years, sad they'll be no more. He definitely lost a little in later years but still one of the best critics around till his last.
coda
I only just heard Ebert was ill again and now he's dead. So sad. He seemed like a nice chap as well. I think his previous illness informed some of his later reviews.
mjmooney Posted April 4, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted April 4, 2013 (edited) Just watched The Way. Really enjoyed it, but the following bit of dialogue left me rather perplexed: Jack: "So, there you have it. Proof once again that Americans can't hold their liquor" Joost: "...Says the man with an Aston Villa patch on his bag!" What is that supposed to mean? Rodders
missed that when I saw it. Will have to watch again! I liked The Way as well, but I almost insta-like anything with martin sheen in. Ebert watched Into the Abyss this morning. Superb, absolutely fascinating, disconcerting, disarming and a little disturbing.
Ghost
I like Will Smith as an actor, and in any interviews I've seen, he comes across as a decent bloke, though his recent interview about Django gave off the idea that he's got a bit of an ego. Thought he was really good in Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness. He was probably the best part of I am Legend as well. Can't forget the Fresh Prince, good memories. I'm interested to see how After Earth will turn out.
mjmooney Posted April 5, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted April 5, 2013 missed that when I saw it. Will have to watch again! I liked The Way as well, but I almost insta-like anything with martin sheen in. It's the bit where they all get really pissed and start arguing. Jack (James Nesbitt) rabbits on about mediaeval books and Tom (Martin Sheen) loses it and tells him he's arrogant and boring. Jack says this proves Americans can't hold their drink, and then the Dutch guy makes the quip about Villa. Didn't make any sense to me.

PieFacE Posted April 6, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted April 6, 2013 (edited) Watched Gangster Squad last night. Could have done with being about an hour longer with more character development. It's a good film, with good acting, and a good story... but is just missing something. The only thing I could put it down to was lack of character development. It moves at about a 1000miles an hour and there isn't really a scene with decent dialogue between two characters. Could have been a lot better. 7/10. Xela
Re-watched a few De Niro / Pacino classics over the last two days. Casino, Heat and Carlito's Way. All fantastic. I've said it before in another discussion on here but I do prefer Casino to Goodfellas.
