Designer1 Posted January 20, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted January 20, 2013 Just watched The Impossible. I thought apart from the excellent Tsunami sequence, and a genuinely moving scene with Ewan McGregor on a mobile phone it was pretty bland stuff, with blatant emotional hooks and some incredibly poor dialogue. The original story of the Spanish family that it's based on deserved a better treatment imo.

BOF Posted January 21, 2013 Moderator Share Posted January 21, 2013 I quite liked the premise behind that. It's an enjoyable enough watch for what it is
Pelle
Saw The dark knight rises this Friday. Thought it was very good. Less action than the previous two, but more of a story. BB 7.5/10 TDK 9/10 TDKR 8/

CarewsEyebrowDesigner
Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty and The Last Stand are all out this week, and I want to see all three. I don't like when this happens. Edited January 22, 2013 by CarewsEyebrowDesigner
Chindie Posted January 22, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted January 22, 2013 I'm strangely not interested in any of those. Lincoln is Spielberg in Oscar baiting mode as far as i can tell which is usually tedious, regardless of an apparently top DDL performance. I have absolutely no interest in the propaganda movie Bigelow has put out. And the Last Stand... Bleh.
CarewsEyebrowDesigner
If The Last Stand was directed by anyone else I'd pass, but Kim Jee-Woon has made some terrific films (mainly horror) over the years, which has me intrigued.
Designer1 Posted January 22, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted January 22, 2013 Zero Dark Thirty is very good indeed. Not without it's problems (main character lacks a decent backstory, the movie assumes you know alot about the history and details of the events and some of the dialogue is a bit vague) but Jessica Chastain is superb, the direction is pretty much flawless and it does ask some interesting questions. If The Last Stand was directed by anyone else I'd pass, but Kim Jee-Woon has made some terrific films (mainly horror) over the years, which has me intrigued. That's the only reason i'll be interested in seeing it too.
Stevo985 Posted January 22, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted January 22, 2013 I'm intrigued by Zero Dark Thirty. It does look interesting, and Hurt Locker was excellent. But (like CHindie it would appear) the likelihood of it being a huge America wankfest puts me off.
BOF Posted January 22, 2013 Moderator Share Posted January 22, 2013 American wankfest I can live with. Let's face it we've lived with watching Hollywood since for ever. It's the fact it will be a completely lie-fest that would make me avoid it. If you watch it as anything other than a complete work of fiction that happens to be 'based loosely on true events' then you're doing yourself a dis-service. Designer1 Posted January 22, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted January 22, 2013 Personally didn't find it too Jingoistic anyway. I dare say there are elements of truth to it (the final 20 minutes was based around extensive research iirc) but yes, watch it as a work of fiction and it's a very well made, well acted movie. PieFacE Posted January 22, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted January 22, 2013 I tried to watch Lincoln but maybe i'm just too dumb or too English but it bored the living shit out of me. Turned it off half way through which is rare for me. Sleep seemed like a better option.
Designer1 Posted January 22, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted January 22, 2013 (edited) Very much looking forward to the new Michael Winterbottom movie Everyday. He's such an eclectic director and has made some absolute gems. And with Shirely Henderson and John Simm starring I think it'll be another winner. 'Lie' was probably harsh as that implies intentional hoodwinking. The fact is they don't and can't know what happened, making it a fairly pointless film other than to waste 2 hours. Maybe it is to Republicans what Inglourious was to the Jewish community. A kind of porno of sorts.
AshVilla
Watched Aliens again to get me in the mood for the upcoming Aliens : Colonial Marines game The game will probably suck apparently it's got a lot of scripted action but Pulse Rifles are back The film is 10/10 it never gets old They're coming out the walls They're coming out the goddamn walls!
