Mark Albrighton Posted October 21, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted October 21, 2021 The Last Duel seems to be getting generally reasonable reviews. I’m just not sure it’s what the cinema going public are looking for. Maybe if it was a Netflix series or something. I’m trying to think what was the most recent historical film to gain significant interest at the cinema (and by historical I mean something closer in style to swords and sandals stuff, rather than Downton Abbey). The Revenant maybe? I’m interested in it that I’d watch it but I probably wouldn’t pay to go and see it unless I knew someone who also wanted to see it. Ridley Scott has previous with The Duelists which I remember enjoying. But then I find stuff like that quite interesting. Just not enough to help it out at the box office. Rodders
I've seen the trailer so often in the past few weeks of going to the cinema, yet not once did my wife or I express any interest in seeing it. Just elicted a vague shrug of 'well, if nothing else is on, it might be ok' about it. But it also feels like Adam Driver has starred in 34556 films in the past 2 years as well. How can something with such an exciting premise look so bland? Absolute cookie cutter action blockbuster.

I think that's mainly due to the nature of home cinema though. It's not like I don't watch 'worthy' films, but with kids it's such a faff to actually manufacture time to go to out to the flicks, I will probably only do it for big epic films where watching it on a massive 40 ft screen is going to form part of the spectacle. People have 4k TVs at home, and stream in UHD these days. Plus the wait for new films to arrive on streaming platforms is shorter than ever. So for dramas, documentaries, character pieces etc, I'll just watch it at home. Especially given the risks of covid. Cinemas are for better or worse specialising in 'event' screenings. Which is why i'm surprised they don't show more live concerts, theatre recordings etc, especially when it's so hard to get tickets for real concerts.
Mark Albrighton Posted October 21, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted October 21, 2021 I’ve just watched Poltergeist for the first time tonight. It has that Spielberg “sense of wonder” about it so it never really feels like a full on horror. And it kinda has two endings. It felt like it ended when the house is “clean” (and not “clear” like Ace Ventura has had me believing for years) and then did a load of stuff in the final twenty minutes that could have happened throughout the rest of the film. It’s entertaining enough though. However I found myself being more engrossed and horrified reading about Dominique Dunne. Horrible.

Absolutely excruciatingly dull. I went with my mom and if it wasn't for the fact I was with her I'd have walked out. Turns out she was thinking exactly the same thing. I understand that it's a good film, but it was just one of those films that absolutely missed the mark for me. You couldn't pay me to watch that film again.

I went to see this last night. It's... ok. Great cast, and I actually really liked the story. The way it's shown as well is quite clever. If anyone's ever seen the TV show "The Affair" it's very similar to that. Where they show stuff from one character's point of view, then from a different character's point of view. Some of it are literally the same scene, but things happen slightly differently depending on the point of view you're watching. That being said, something about the actors and the script made it very strange. They're in France, but they all talk in sometimes not very good English accents. Except for the odd person who speaks in a french accent. Or Matt Damon who speaks with his normal voice. But they all talk in ye olde English style language, but it's set in France. I know other films have done this like Enemy at the Gate or Chernobyl and it works, but it didn't work this time. Gave the whole thing a bit of Monty Python vibe. So yeah. Average Edit: oh and as for popularity I've been to the cinema a LOT over the last couple of months and apart from Bond this was the busiest I'd seen a screen. I still think it'll be a flop but there were plenty of people there Edited October 22, 2021 by Stevo985
Rodders
I came away from TTSS wanting to read the book instead, the film tries to cram far too much in. But better than the book even is the Alec Guinness TV adaptation. I think it's on youtube or videomotion or someplace like that and it's well worth watching. The Story needed more than 2.5 hours to do it justice, despite an absurdly impressive cast list.

BOF Posted October 22, 2021 Moderator Share Posted October 22, 2021 It beggars belief that Hollywood doesn't have a better solution than using real guns (and calling them props). It's amazing this doesn't happen more often tbh. Awful for the victims but awful for Baldwin too. This will haunt him. Could see him quit altogether. Just a disastrous story all-round.
Chindie Posted October 22, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted October 22, 2021 On set an actor will only use a fireable gun for the scene necessary and it's the responsibility of the weapon master to ensure it is safe and the people on set are safe. Any time they have a gun otherwise it's a prop, usually a rubber dummy, to ensure the exposure to a real firearm is as limited as possible. If, like Brandon Lee, they've missed a squib round, that's a case of gross negligence and they'll be facing extremely severe consequences.

Rodders
I would most likely assume it's the prop master who's at fault for not looking after the guns properly. .. bang out of order really. ( sorry ) 1

maqroll
Not at all important given the context, but I wonder if the film gets shut down for good or if they continue. They finished The Crow and it made money. Tragic situation. I do wonder about Baldwin. He has a wicked temper. And he shot two people, not one. I may be out of line to speculate like that, but I can't help it.
