Chindie Posted October 9, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted October 9, 2021 Dune in many ways is to sci-fi what Lord of the Rings is to fantasy (although less so - LOTR basically codified what fantasy is in its wake, whereas Dune is just very influential in what a particular kind of pop sci-fi became after it). It's getting rather good reviews too so on my list for the weekend. If it's your kind of thing, you will not be disappointed. Go in as blind as possible. A simple story, told very well, minimalist score used just enough to help smooth the story along its way. Not many players but all in fine form, especially the two leads who were perfect. If, like me you grew up watching westerns then you will like this a lot. Don't read that damn spoiler. Spoiler If you really pay attention, you can sort of see it coming but still, the twist is superb and makes this piece super good for me, I grew up in awe of these legendary characters. 1
villarule123 Posted October 9, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted October 9, 2021 I'm probably late with this but the reviews for Dune are amazing. Can't wait for the 21st!

useless
Out 1: Noli Me Tangere This is a nearly thirteen hour film from Jacques Rivette, it was originally made for TV to be aired as seperate episodes, so the runtime that's often cited as a reason for it being a difficult movie is misleading as it's broken up into different parts, meaning you can watch it in the same way that you might watch a TV series. The plot follows two characters that independently of each other find evidence of a secret society influenced by Honoré de Balzac's History of the Thirteen, operating in Paris, the film follows them as they try and find out more. Alongside this you've also got two experimental theatre groups rehearsing Aeschylus plays, their initial rehearsal scenes can be quite tedious and I think probably put a lot of people off to begin with. Luckily after the first few episodes, you see more of the two characters investigating the secret socitey and through those investigations more characters and plotlines are introduced which is when the film becomes more interesting, in fact I'd say that the theatre rehearsal scenes aside, this is probably Rivette's most mainstream film other than Celine and Julie go Boating, and has a lot of similarities with that film, both have Juliet Berto playing a similar character, both have two people investigating a mystery, both have a big creepy old house, and both have a comedy element but also become more surreal and slightly unsettling as they go along, especially in the last two epsidodes of Out 1 which has some of the creepiest scenes I've seen, that wouldn't look out of place in a David Lynch film, in fact the whole thing also has a lot of similarites with Twin Peaks. I liked it a lot, another one that stays on your mind after you've watched it.

Have seen them multiple times but never tire of watching them. Gene Hackman at his best.
Davkaus
I watched The Guilty earlier. Probably a 4/10 for me, an hour and a half of a single character talking in to a phone, making increasingly unrealistic choices. Spoiler Half way in to the film I thought there was some crazy twist coming along because none of it made any sense, and I was almost expecting a Shutter Island style switcheroo, but it turns out it's just a very poor film with a ridiculously unrealistic plot. Underwhelmed doesn't cover it

It has some moments , it’s not terrible … it’s just not really Bond You know how when it’s late night and you are channel hopping and Casino Royale is three quarters of the way though and you really should just switch the tv off but you stay and watch the rest of the film even though you’ve seen it 20 times …. I just don’t see anyone ever wanting to watch this Bond film a second time …guess I’ll know the answer to that when it’s on ITV3 at 23:00 on a Thursday night in a few years time Thought it was just me. I thought it was poor - was it ever explained why the arch baddy wanted to wipe out civilisation and Bond ? It was painfully long - and I just stopped caring towards the end.

SPOILERS FOR BOTH VERSIONS: Spoiler I can't believe they changed the ending. In the original the baby is dead which had so much more impact and made the whole conversation between the main guy and the woman ultimately futile. Proper cop out Hollywood shite. tinker Posted October 10, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted October 10, 2021 Just watched The Many Saints of Newark, good film with some great acting. The mannerisms of the actors is great, never knew Sal had a wig on. Makes me miss the Sopranos even more than normal, might have to give it another go, ( be the 4th watch)
Designer1 Posted October 10, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted October 10, 2021 Watched this last night and thought it was superb. Tight, minimalist direction (reminded me of Kill List in some shots), good performances from the cast and a note perfect, chilling atmosphere. Also, the most disturbing puppet I've seen since Possum. Recommended. @sne @leemond2008 think you chaps would like this if you haven't already seen it

Chindie Posted October 10, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted October 10, 2021 The Parapod Movie. Finally released online, I managed to watch it tonight. And... Well. The Parapod, particularly the first series, is fantastic. It's proper lightning in a bottle stuff. The format is very simple, believer and skeptic, discuss a haunting or paranormal event each episode and it descends into hilarity from there. And it is bloody funny. It's evident that the believer is genuinely interested in the cases and it makes it all the funnier as he's logically taken apart. As the 3 series progress it gets less funny because they lose that, it becomes less genuine, more clearly artifice. The movie kinda suffers from that same issue. It is still funny, but it's nowhere near what the podcast was. It's kinda not helped by the fact it does retread the same territory of the first series but it's done with the tone of where the second and third series ended up. So it's still funny, but it's not that brilliant thing that it was. But it's still a funny, silly 90 mins of people pissing about in allegedly haunted places, it's worth your time. And if you haven't listened to the Parapod, that first series is **** brilliant.
