Nigel Posted October 19, 2010 VT Supporter Share Posted October 19, 2010 Ending ruined it for me though. Agreed, I just got the feeling it was not how it was meant to turn out either!
JulieB
Tbf, The Fourth Kind is a load of bollocks. Creepy though when you're watching late at night. More like the Exorcist than a Sci-Fi film!
sonic_bouma
i know this is the recommend a film thread but forgive me.... watched Precious for the first time the other night..cant believe it took me so long to get round to watching it.... but possibly one of the most overrated films ive ever seen..after over a year of hearing how great it is i was disappointed... just didnt get it....didnt feel for the main character at all...sad subject obviously but no real story...every line that was supposed to hit home emotionally didnt for me because there was very little groundwork laid in terms of character beforehand. Troglodyte Posted October 19, 2010 VT Supporter Share Posted October 19, 2010 Those who've seen 'The Social Network' - I assume I'm wrong with my initial assumption that it was just 'a film about Facebook'? Didn't think the trailer looked great either in all honesty, but may have to give it a watch with all the good reviews. Off to see 'The Other Guys' at the cinema tomorrow, anyone seen that? Looks very funny.

The Winfrey factor. If Oprah says it's good (and she would because she Exec produced and funded it), nobody is going to say a bad thing about it. Can't comment really though as I've not seen it. Chindie Posted October 19, 2010 VT Supporter Share Posted October 19, 2010 The Social Network isn't really a film about Facebook at all... it deals with it's creation but is more interested in the problems that arose from it's creation. It is effectively about the creator of Facebook, the fact that he's a really quite a vile person, and that he was taken to court twice because his creation of Facebook lead to him being accused of screwing his best mate out of a fortune and also that he nicked the idea from 2 guys he was at Harvard with. The films foundation is the paradox that someone pretty much completely bereft of social skill, ended up creating one of the biggest revolutions of social interaction in history. It's not really about Facebook as such. Facebook just happens to be the reason it exists.

Chindie Posted October 19, 2010 VT Supporter Share Posted October 19, 2010 It's worth a watch. It's well made and acted and it hides the few moments where the creation of the idea of Facebook might be a little... dull... in it's structure, the whole thing is framed by the court cases that Zuckerberg went through. It's funny in a few moments as well. Just don't expect to have any sympathy at all for Zuckerberg, the main character, he's a really unlikable guy. He's so unlikable he's actually interesting for it. EDIT - Also worth bearing in mind the film is pretty much entirely dialogue (no bad thing) but because it's a Sorkin screenplay, the dialogue is brilliant but really rapid fire, you need to be listening. Troglodyte Posted October 19, 2010 VT Supporter Share Posted October 19, 2010 Sounds good, much deeper than I thought. Think I'll wait for the DVD release but will certainly watch it then.

Rapid-fire because there was too much dialogue in the screenplay, apparently. Sorkin said he couldn't cut any of it as it would compromise the plot-line so they decided the actors would just have to deliver the lines quicker. Chindie Posted October 19, 2010 VT Supporter Share Posted October 19, 2010 Aye I heard that as well. Sorkin's stuff always has the snappy quick witted dialogue though, it's just in this he's had to turn it up to 11.
Amsterdam_Neil_D
Watched Predators yesterday, 8/10. I was surprised but I really enjoyed it. Watched The Experiment Monday, 6/10. Worth a watch as the concept was OK but they could have done a lot more with it. Highlights why the Police are mostly clearings in the woods though. CarewsEyebrowDesigner
I just watched Eyes Wide Shut for the second time, and I can say it was a hell of a lot better this time round. I guess it's one of those movies that'll age well after initial criticism, pretty much like every other of Kubricks post-Dr. Strangelove movies. Eyes Wide Shut is genius but i think i'm in the only person in the world who thinks it. So so much going on its unbelievable, from camera angles for certain characters and situations to seemingly dumb conversations but not really... Helps if you watch it around the time its set as well late at night... But then again i seem to be the only person who likes it
CarewsEyebrowDesigner
I think a lot of people mis-understood it when it initially came out, and it certainly wasn't helped by its bizzare marketing campaign which centred around the Cruise and Kidman getting their kit off. So what happened was people flocked to the movie like horny teenagers to a porno, hoping for a few hours of high-class sexy time and feeling awfully smutty about it all. Then when it ended and nothing of the sort happened, they missed the entire point of the movie. Instead of watching what was there, they were anticipating what was never going to happen. It also wasn't helped by being incredibly subtle, and our pre-disposition to listen rather than see. It is very, very good though now that i've watched it again and understood it a bit better, but like 2001 and the Shining it'll take a few more watches to get all the subtext and not just the over-all idea. As I said, I think it's getting a lot more love now than it did back then.
