Xela
Yeah I just saw that, couldn't be bothered to really look into it though. I am thinking about watching either American Hustle or The Wolf of Wall Street tonight. How do you get to view the latest films like that? I assume not at the cinema? any helpful pointers gratefully received and appreciated (via PM if breaking site rules). Ta Are you the same age as Mike??? PS it rhymes with Splorrents It was a discreet way of getting specific recommend sites to view such aforementioned films. Information now received via PM It was Limewire back in my day! Xela
For anybody missing any of the following from their BD collection: American Gangster Carlito's Way Casino Public Enemies Scarface http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultimate-Gangsters-2011-Blu-ray-Region/dp/B0058O9YP0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1389829951&sr=8-1&keywords=ultimate+gangsters £10.60 including free delivery, next day delivery if you have Prime. Amazon will be the death of my bank account. I was looking to purchase Scarface for around £7 on BD until I saw the set, which is worth it for Casino and Scarface alone. They're all in their original retail cases too so no need to keep the cover/box sleeve they come in. Brilliant! Gangster films are on of those things that I do enjoy, but I actually rarely watch them if that makes sense. So out of the films in that box set, I've only seen American Gangster. So £10.60 well spent! cheers Cracking films, even Public Enemies was watchable. On the subject of this genre, watched Gansgster Squad last night. Average... only real positive was Sean Penn. Oh and Emma Stone looking hot
villa4europe
public enemies just went a bit daft with the police station scene and other stuff and from i can remember some of the camera work is trying to be clever and just looks really ropey one of them films thats ok but could / should have been so much better, of which the most annoying thing being that no one will try a better attempt at the story for a few years now, the worst offender of course being pearl harbour
CarewsEyebrowDesigner
Yeah, the cinematography in Public Enemies is very odd. It's shot in HD digital rather than film and that always looks weird, especially when it is all shaky-cam. War Horse was probably the worst example of using digital in a movie I can remember. It made it look like someone filmed a play rather than someone made a film out of a play, if that makes sense. In fact all of Spewberg's films look odd as hell since he switched to digital. Not a fan of it at all.

Not a fan of it at all. It is actually the norm to film digitally now and it certainly doesn't make anything look weird. I haven't seen Public Enemies yet but what you may be referring to is the frame rate the film was shot in. Edit: Just saw that Michael Mann directed Public Enemies so that would explain a lot. He shoots at a shutter speed of 1/24 in many scenes in his movies, one of the reasons why I get put off watching Miami Vice because I don't like it. Difficult for me to explain but cinematic visuals such as movies are most commonly shot at 24fps (frames per second, the amount of 'still images' taken every second), TV shows are most commonly shot at 30fps. The shutter speed Mann likes to shoot at gives the look of a 30fps visual but it is actually shot at 24fps, which explains the way you think it looks like somebody has filmed a play. Here is an explanation of shutter speed (go to 1:26) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kD8nXGt91yo&feature=youtu.be&t=1m26s Edited January 17, 2014 by samjp26
CarewsEyebrowDesigner
Nothing gets me hot and bothered like fps. Although I do maintain that movies shot in 'film' look better than those shot in digital. Edited January 17, 2014 by CarewsEyebrowDesigner

Brumerican
Finally I have found out that frames per second means how many frames were shot per second. That has bugged me for years.

Chindie Posted January 18, 2014 VT Supporter Share Posted January 18, 2014 Public Enemies does have a very odd look to it at times. The bigger issue, for me anyway, though, is Mann's tin ear. The audio mix on that film is awful.
