Ginko
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y8PeR6vpcs Thought 'Rise' was great so really looking forward to this. Same, it was one of my favourite films of 2011 so I'm looking forward to this. No James Franco though
CarewsEyebrowDesigner
OK, history buffs, I need some good documentaries & films that focus on Europe around 1936-41ish, and preferably from a German perspective. I don't ask for much.
Designer1 Posted December 18, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted December 18, 2013 Off to see Anchorman 2 in a bit. I know it will disappoint, but i'm hoping for at least a glimpse of the originals genius.

I don't ask for much. why those 5 years? hard to nail that particular time period, these are all good films told from the german perspective though - obvious ones downfall, boy in the striped pyjamas, Valkyrie counterfeiters - film about a concentration camp where they counterfeit money and try to ruin the allies economy by flooding the market with fake notes anonyma: a woman in berlin - nice family feel good film about how around 2m women were raped by russian soldiers after the war good - about germans who didnt support the nazis the lives of others - its set in 84 so a lot later than you're after, but its a superb film about the stasi spying on people in east berlin white ribbon - set in 14 so earlier than you want! thats about the outbreak of WW1, not really a war film tbf and i found it a bit boring, but it gets great reviews and won something a cannes a few years back you could try the reader but thats a bit of a romance film with a good twist half way through ones i havent seen - sophie scholl going away from germany and in to europe - katyn, blackbook once you're in that zone go even further and try city of life and death and flowers of war

I don't ask for much. "Europa, Europa" is a great film based on a true story of an "Aryan looking" German Jew who survives (just) the war by joining the Hitler Youth. Came out in 1990. Gripping film. CarewsEyebrowDesigner
. why those 5 years? hard to nail that particular time period, these are all good films told from the german perspective though - I find the build up to WWII around Europe, and the discrimination/violence toward the Jews (and others) that eventually led to the Holocaust, quite interesting, and I haven't seen many fims or documentaries that deal with that period just before the war, and Germany (and Poland etc) just after war was declared. Good list though, cheers. Hitler the rise of evil Holocaust was an american drama series from 1978 The grey zone Stuff along these lines, really. "Europa, Europa" is a great film based on a true story of an "Aryan looking" German Jew who survives (just) the war by joining the Hitler Youth. Came out in 1990. Gripping film. And this! He is a truly superb actor. I watched it on CH4 the other night for the first time ... TBH I couldn't work out how he got the Oscar (other than the usual brown envelope that is the only way to win an Oscar) I mean compare that performance to Jackmans in Prisoners and Jackman makes him look like someone in a Village play ... and Jackman won't even get a nomination Film itself was decent enough , QT has an eye for totty in that film , thats for sure
tonyh29
Just seen Alpha Papa. One of the funniest films I've ever seen. Brilliant. did you get the glasses gag at the beginning ( most people I've spoken to missed it ) He's watching porn and you can see it reflecting on his glasses whilst he talks to Lyn about Kestrels (or some bird of prey) that he claims to be reading about

Claude Lanzmann has a new documentary coming out called The Last of the Unjust about an alleged Jewish collaborator. There's Nazi propaganda like The Eternal Jew documentary. I think this is banned but is probably available on internets.
