Didn't realise at the time how spoilt we were having him and some of the others in that superb team.

thunderball Posted Tuesday at 14:20 Share Posted Tuesday at 14:20 It was Gary Shaw's Villa that introduced me to Villa, my father is from Balsall Heath and as a kid we used to spend time with a pal of his in Atherstone whose whole family were Villa fans. It was the title season that hooked me, and Gary Shaw was such a stand out player on the small portable TV we used to watch the games on, even to my young and inexperienced eye. Football in that era seemed more simple and natural, especially revisiting these clips from the era today. Far too young, and such a shame that he is lost in the 150th season when we will surely be celebrating the heroes from Shaw's era, as historically I'm not sure the club has given them as much prominence as they deserve. RIP Gary.

Being an oldie has the odd advantage, in that I think I was at all of his home games and most of his away games. Having seen us in the mid to late 60s, I did know how lucky we were to have Gary, hot on the heels of Brian. Glory days indeed. There will be some tears in eyes at Villa Park on Saturday and against Bayern won't there? I know how well the 80s team got on with each other too and they will be taking this very hard too.

Popular Post TheAuthority Posted 12 hours ago VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted 12 hours ago My first football hero. I was a blonde kid and so was Gary and he was a f**** magician. A local youth team player won us the league and the European Cup and was European young player of the year. What he would have done on todays pitches in todays game is unimaginable and he should have the star of the ‘82 goal shy England team if the manager wasn’t such a hick. If injuries hadn’t destroyed him (even 10 years later technology and medicine had evolved so much his career would have been saved) we may have been talking about Mexico ‘86 as Gary Shaw’s World Cup, not Maradona’s.
delboy54
You cannot imagine these days that a player like Gary Shaw would not even pick up a full England cap...
