Galway Lion Posted Monday at 15:34 Share Posted Monday at 15:34 Never thought anyone could replace Brian Little growing up but Gary certainly did. An absolute legend and dream to watch. He won it all for us and helped us dare to dream. Shocking that he never got a full England cap but London and red top bias was just as bad back then. RIP Gary another HEITS
Popular Post danceoftheshamen Posted Monday at 15:36 Popular Post Share Posted Monday at 15:36 So very sad to hear this tragic news. Without doubt my favourite player from that 80-82 (& beyond) team for so many reasons. The chant ""Gary Shaw,... Gary Shaw....Gary Gary Shaw.... When he gets the ball he's bound to score....Gary Gary Shaw"" His incredible goals and finishing skills. He was a true fox in the box type striker but so much more too. His passing was very underatted I always felt and he was effectively the glue which made us function in attack. When he got badly injured we were never the same team again. He came back but was not the same sadly and appeared to adapt his game but lost the killer edge. I also used to have the same Blonde sideflick hairstyle and always used to get mistaken for him. Once when I worked for Mita Copiers I was in the executive box with the heads of Mita who were over from Japan. We got paraded on the pitch into the centre circle 5 mins prior to KO in a home game against Arsenal on a Wednesday night. I was in a suit & "Welcome to our guests from Mita" was blasting out over the tannoy & screening across the old single line, digitial boards which used to sit in two corners of the stadium. The holte end thought I was Gary Shaw (Who was out injured at the time) & started chanting his song at me! For me Gary Shaw was the one player who I always looked for first on the line up. I also remember going to Wolves away once & he scored a couple of goals in front of us travelling fans. Brilliant finishes right in the corners. We won 0-3 & a mate of mine (Previously a Wolves fan) was so impressed he switched his alegiance & became a Villa fan there & then. So RIP Gary! So many fabulous memories & moments which I will never forget. A true Villa Legend.
The Fun Factory Posted Monday at 15:45 Share Posted Monday at 15:45 Short, but what a career. To win not only the league but the European cup with the team you grew up supporting is quite something.

He was one of a few of the '82 team that gave me and a few others a tour of the stadium on a function night when I was younger. They were all total gents. Mantis Posted Monday at 15:55 Share Posted Monday at 15:55 Very sad news. Much before my time but he's one of those names I was always fully aware of. RIP.
delboy54 Posted Monday at 16:43 Share Posted Monday at 16:43 Apparently the European cup commentary banner that was on the North Stand is being restated on the Holte End. Gary Shaw will then still be remembered... Saw him play and score so many times, absolutely gutted that he has gone at such a young age. I know it sounds corny but on Saturday before the game I might put a small bunch of flowers underneath his picture at the Holte End and pay my respects for a minute or two

sheepyvillian Posted Monday at 17:45 Share Posted Monday at 17:45 Just watching him on the news. It's difficult to take, it really is. Hopefully, we can use it to inspire us in the Champions League, especially against Munich. What a tribute that would be, to Gary, beating them.

His brace in the European Cup would be phenomenal, but anything really... Different times. Only a small number of games were televised, compared with today. Pretty sure my favourite GS memory wasn't televised, but I watched, mesmerised, from the away end at the City Ground, as Gary and Tony Morley played one-twos the length of the pitch, bamboozling the Forest defenders, with Shaw finishing the move by slamming a shot past Peter Shilton. Poetry in motion.

Popular Post The Moustache of Teale Posted Monday at 18:17 Popular Post Share Posted Monday at 18:17 It feels like as a club we have lost too many former players before their time but for me, this one hits hard. I really got hooked on supporting Villa at around 11-12 years old, at the time when Gary was on the verge of achieving every boyhood Villa fan’s dream. He was only 8 years older than me and I feel like I’ve got a whole lot of life still to live. Never met him personally but have heard and read nothing but good words about him. The timing is poignant too. Imagine how proud he’d have felt as we lined up against Bayern Munich in 2 week’s time. Heart-wrenching. 4
