I wish Europe would send more of its "cast-offs" to the USA. We could use them. You don't want them, Nigel? Send them to us, please. Immigrants are the lifeblood of the whole idea of America. They're often the very best of humanity, as I see it -- bold, intelligent, creative, willing to work their arses off. We need to open legal channels, not tighten them.

As most of you know, a minority of British people have been complaining reflexively (and often with violence and bigotry) about immigrants for a millennium, so it's not like this is some big new thing. Americans have been doing the same for almost 200 years, and it's a big campaign issue for the MAGA crowd, but others worry about it, too.  Xenophobia in both places simmers under the surface almost continually. Londoners, too, have often been the worst offenders.

Being "legal" or not has never much mattered or stemmed the hatred towards strangers. Xenophobia gets worse at times of economic downturns, but not always. But surely there's room for legit concern, too. My dad and mom's family both emigrated legally, through proper channels, but my grandma faced discrimination anyway. My mates made fun my English dad and his funny Bewdley accent or whatever it is. And they were perfectly legal. And there will always been people who come as refugees and outside the system -- always have been.

I can tell you that in the USA, we're facing a genuine crisis of a lack of workers, and we desperately need new people to fill jobs here, but an "open border" (which is a partly a fiction but partly not) bothers people for a lot of good reasons. I understand that concern. I think we have to manage immigration as best we can, balancing economic and humanitarian needs. It will never be easy, nor should it be, nor is it. We've seen the wrong way to express concern. It's been universally and rightly condemned. I think a lot of concerns are based on misinformation and ignorance.
 I've always been impressed by Britain's creative economy in recent years, but that, too, needs a fresh influx of talent and specialised skills.

Grapes of Wrath is a good read in relation to immigration, cynicism, nonsense excuses, fear mongering, and power structures (aka the rich) winding up people related to the plight of desperate fellow human beings. 

And in this book the desperate people are from Oklahoma and they're travelling to California – and the people who don't trust them, block them, and despise them are just fellow Americans in the next state over. Of course, there are stories told about the 'Oakies' to justify the xenophobia and the way they are then treated and dehumanised.

Some woman interviewed by Sky at the Newcastle anti immigration demonstration has said that the rioters were "hyped up by mainstream media" 

How do the right wing keep convincing people that mainstream media are the root of all evil? 

**** me, how have The Guardian or The BBC hyped up people to riot yet Twitter and Facebook have in her eyes done nothing? Oh, and she's not racist of course, it's like a mantra. 

One of the anti racism brigade absolutely hit the nail on the head. 

Said protesters have some legitimate worries about poverty and services, but are blaming the wrong people.

Stated people have shown their true colours, like Nigel Farage and other mainstream politicians who have whipped up hatred" and blamed billionaires for the issues and that deprivation and lack of funding for services "is not the fault of asylum seekers or Muslims".

The Daily Mail, Express, Telegraph are mainstream media. So is GB News. You could argue Farage on YouTube is too. And some of the radio presenters?

Oh dear. Wife of the Tory councillor has been sent to Crown Court at the magistrate felt the offence was too serious to be dealt with by him. 

To be fair it's absolutely evil what she posted.

I think she's going away for some time. Lessons to be learned by keyboard warriors here.

It is evil but she fell for all the misinformation at a very emotional time. Not excusing it but a lot of people really do believe everything they hear or read and get very easily manipulated. 
 

As for the riots it's been a quiet weekend hasn't it?  I think the nonsense is over now.

It’s a great read, period. Classic novel 

Woody Guthrie (probably my favorite American) well-captured this is in Do Re Mi:

Yesterdays planned far right “protest” at the Pier Head in Liverpool went ahead

Nobody listened to the 4 people that showed up

So last week it was approx 500 

Midweek it was about 40

Yesterday 4 people shouted at the clouds

So it seems critical thinking is to be introduced to the curriculum according to Bridget Phillipson to help kids spot fake news and conspiracy theories. I know a few on here have been championing this for a while.

Was wondering wether any incidents in rugeley would occur. There’s been a couple of minor incidents but that probably happens most weeks anyway. There’s a road in town called horse fair and out of the 15 businesses on that road 10 are foreign owned. Then you’ve got a lot in the town centre that are now foreign owned. I didn’t think much would happen if anything at all . Couple of hotels in town house immigrants too or at least did until very recently. One of the hotels in question had been closed for a while so it was doing nothing anyway.

The media have in some way been responsible for these riots, with both left and right wing sources failing to call out successive governments, with the right wing especially instead pointing the finger at people from differing ethnic and religious backgrounds.

Wages continually get lower in real terms every year, gathering steam over the last decade. I've not seen anybody nail the Tory government over this. Less and less low skilled jobs are offering secure working hours and rights. Again, relative media silence. Huge inflation rises, insatiable corporate greed, and no internal investment in infrastructure or the UK workforce. Not a mainstream voice to be heard. For the longest time everything has been short term thinking at the expense of the public.

If the media reported that this was affecting the vast majority of people in this country regardless of race, religion, where you were born, or how you got here, then I think we'd all be more likely to realise we've got a lot more in common with each other and we're all being divided so nobody looks too closely at what the cause of the problems are.

The racists would be ostracized by everyone before these riots even started.

Obviously voices on the right are claiming Starmer is implementing a communist, totalitarian state.  Lolz.
