ccfcman
Onana playing under Emery could be the best midfielder in the PL. He works so hard, his stamina is crazy. Wasted at Everton while still looking like their best player by a mile. He'll cover every blade of grass twice. This was the midfielder we needed. If DO is reporting it, this generally means it's nailed on.

People expecting him to play like kante and going to be disappointed. He will attack much more than just being a DM.

TomC
Can't say that I saw this one coming. From what I've seen in clips so far, his positional sense is excellent. He moves well for a tall guy, too I usually get it wrong when I try to analyze the reasons for transfers, but I'll take a shot. I'm going to assume that we're still 4-4-2 in defence and most often 3-box-3 in attack. I agree with everyone that Onana's here for the Kamara role in the double pivot. I think that Enzo was signed for this role, too. It seems to me that they want two capable DMs even before Kamara comes back. If Enzo ends up surplus to requirements after Kamara is back, so be it. What I see differently than some people is that I think Barkley was signed to be the other double pivot and take over Doug's role. He operated as the deep lying playmaker for Luton last year and will probably do the same for us. I don't see Tielemans playing that role unless necessary because of injuries. He's really better off in the front of the box than the back. As for the front of the box, we have Rogers and JJ on the left, McGinn and Tielemans on the right. And that doesn't even take into consideration that Buendia can play in midfield too, though he will probably play in the forward line (especially if Diaby moves on as rumoured). I have no idea where Iling fits into all this, but it may be telling that that the club's web site describes him as a winger. Maybe he's there to provide width on the left in attack in matches where the left back can't join the attack for tactical reasons.
KentVillan
One of those signings where everyone just looks at it and thinks it’s a great bit of business. Except for Everton fans maybe. 1
Jas10
Good thread here, undoubtedly more of a defensive player that’s going to really help us out in the areas that we were weak in:

Jas10
Yeah, I can see Tielemans and Onana as our main pivot, at least until Kamara returns. Youri can also play as a 10, supporting the attack. But we’ll probably use other players, maybe a new signing, there more often and maybe Onana is the ideal partner for him back in midfield. The options and depth we have there is good… Barkley and Barrenechea are good backups or alternatives. McGinn can fill in but… shouldn’t anymore really. Better in other positions. sharkyvilla
I doubt Kamara and Onana will play in the middle together but may be wrong. I suspect we will patch up Kamara and sell him in the summer. A guaranteed £40m-50m profit to go in the coffers, hopefully Enzo settles in nicely during the season. I wouldn't rule out Kamara playing more in that right-sided defender's role Konsa was playing though.

Everything I’ve read about Emery’s previous clubs style of playing, to me it’s sounds playing Kamara and Onana together is exactly what he wants. Kamara being the specialised DM while Onana is the defensive box to box midfielder, the double pivot Emery loves so I expect them to play together regularly when Kamara is fit with Tielemans just in front of them.
StewieGriffin
Certainly didn't expect this happening today... We've signed some real physicality this summer - Onana, Barkey, Illing Jr. and Enzo are all units in one way or another. Both of Emery's successfull Spanish teams had beasts in midfield with Iborra, Nzonzi, Capoue... Onana seems like he'll be that player for us.

Jas10
Unless we have no choice (e.g. Dougie sale), we should never sell a player under potential or peak value . Ramsey’s value plummeted due to injury and will skyrocket once he’s fit and firing again. Young, talented, high potential. Highly valued. Would’ve been the worst time to sell, but he’s not available anyway. The same goes for Kamara… once he’s back and performing regularly… it’s not crazy to imagine he could be worth 100m. Especially when you take into account what Chelsea paid for their midfielders. We shouldn’t keep selling our best players anyway, or intend to, unless a monstrous offer arrives. Tie him down to a new deal I say. With the lack of top DMs of more defensively skilled midfielders, Onana may represent a bargain deal and be worth a hell of a lot more quite soon…

alreadyexists Posted July 13 VT Supporter Share Posted July 13 I don’t think he will play in the same role as Dougie as they’re different players, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t his replacement as if Emery wants to play in a different way and needs Onana to fill that role, then I’m fully on board!
