Second time I've voted in Sutton (first time was 2010). It is genuinely bonkers that we could have a Labour MP tomorrow. Would've been unimaginable even two years ago.

Shows you how far Sutton has fallen

I voted at lunchtime and was the only voter in the polling station.

It's the first time since I moved out of my parents house in 1992 that my GE vote might be for the winning candidate. Although, I've got a bad feeling it won't be.😞

I still find this bizarre every time you say it

Some of my friends are politically active and very much anti-Tory ... Whilst I've never asked any of my friends (or family) how they vote (though in most cases I can guess ) I would say my circle of friends represents all political parties ( except for SNP /DUP who don't' really have a say in Surrey ) but the majority are very much apathetic and have probably voted for  numerous parties over the years  ...  to have every SINGLE one so vehemently anti tory suggests either someone was carrying out clandestine brainwashing in the running clubs of Yorkshire  in the 70's or your friends list is comprised solely of people who attended Kier Starmer's lock down curry night.

its not a criticism or anything , as I say I just find it weird   (though we've touched on this before  and I seem to recall your friend circle is more from  academic world than the average person)

I don’t find it weird at all. I’m a kid 30 year old (just for a you get age perspective) and I can confidently say that all of my friends and family are vehemently anti Tory. If I found out someone was a closest blue I’m honestly not sure how the relationship would continue.

Yes, this is again a great right wing trick to pull the wool over peoples eyes.

Withdraw funding from public services - it's not us withdrawing the funding - it's those foreigners arriving ruining everything.

Don't build enough housing causing price increases and homelessness - it's not us failing to build enough homes - it's those foreigners arriving ruining everything.

Don't invest enough in the economy causing stagnation, lack of growth and higher unemployment - it's not us investing/planning enough - it's those foreigners arriving ruining everything.

Don't invest in the NHS causing collapse - it's not us underinvesting in the NHS - it's those foreigners arriving ruining everything.

It's so easy and people lap it up

Would you not agree that it is a factor? Its not the only reason, but increasing immigration does cause pressure on public services. Even Labour have said it needs to reduce.

France,  Germany and Italy citizens have concerns as well, as you can see by the make up of the ruling parties.

I wouldn't even know how my friends vote. Its never really been a topic for any discussion. I could probably guess on a few of them, but it doesn't bother me, even if I disagree with them.

Well we'll find out in the next 3 - 8 years. But the UK birthrate is falling and is well below 2, more like 1.5. The days of 2.4 children are long gone.

The boomers who are the biggest size of age group are going to be sucking away resources in the NHS and social care over the next decade or two.  Without some pretty significant immigration were not going to have enough working age people paying tax to support this.

Which is all happening in Japan right now who have historically been anti immigration and have a very top heavy elderly population which is causing all sorts of issues.

The younger generation seem to hate the tories, good on em I say , their leaches.

People say labour are just the same but ignore the last time they was in power and the progress they made, in comparison to the tories reign it was outstanding.

Hopefully the civil servants have had the foresight to take the cutlery and good biscuits from Downing Street or doubtless the thieves will be stuffing it all in their bags as we speak.

Bye bye thieving scum.

Labour has at least 10 years in power to sort it out. The Tories completely lost the plot on immigration, they didn't know their arse from their elbows.

I don't think many are against immigration, but it needs to controlled and a proper structure put in place. Let the people in who we need, and if that sounds like we are cherry picking, then so be it! Other countries do the same. Offer a certain level of refuge/asylum, but again, it needs to be at manageable levels. This country has benefitted from immigration immensely but a lot of the electorate want to see it controlled and managed better, without being labelled as a racist for suggesting it.

If Labour can get a handle on it, they'll be golden and in power for a long time.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing a new government from tomorrow.

7.00pm  -  this match is 12 hours old with 3 hours plus stoppage time left to play.

The referees are tired and the Pot Noodles are being frantically consumed.

We have already surpassed the turnout at the May local elections by 50%.

Its starting to slow down now.

That would be expected though surely, given how many people turn out for each type of election?

Any gut feeling about how it compares to '19 / '17  / '15 etc? Assuming you were manning the barricades then as well of course.

If your friendships are based upon political views then yes there could be issues. But tbh, most friendships are never based upon that. So no drama, just a few pub debates and ribbing. The hateful ideology can cause some arguments. Yet that’s some bullshit that’s developed from some hardship… help your friend through that hardship and over time, they see they had a glitch. for an example,  a divorce can get some guys falling down a far right black hole.  But getting them out and socialising again meeting new people and they quickly chill out. Particularly when they get a new “friend” 😏

I think it is more complicated than you make it seam though. Labour will not be able to fix the decline either.

The NHS and healthcare being under strain is not unique to the U.K., it is a problem all over the western world where the demographics of an aging population and a relatively smaller workforce means the numbers for the ‘public bargain’ no longer stack up for things like healthcare and pensions.

Western governments encourage immigration to fill that void in the workforce. However it is not a simple solution, it comes with other issues to be resolved. Other public services like schools and housing then feel the stress if a population increases faster than government services can respond.

There is a reason why right wing populists are having a moment all over the western world right now and it’s not as simple as ‘media manipulation’ or ‘Russian interference’. The world is having a bit of an anxious moment and there are genuine issues to be resolved.

Edit: I just saw your response to Xela above where you make a similar point

I can answer that but not until polls close.  There is something relevant that I can't disclose until then.
