Without being too negative, how would people feel if we signed the donkey Cucurella?

Well Maatsen couldnt take his spot or the injury prone Chilwell at Chelsea

i think Cucurella under the right manager, would be great.

But not for the transfer cost and wages he is on now.

Tbf it’s more down to the fact that he’s homegrown, so they have to sell him to fund their spending addiction…

He wasn't getting game time though when he was at Chelsea

just checking i've got this right

sign a player who had a great season for a champions league club last season for money = good

sign a player who had a great season for a champions league club last season as part of a swap deal = bad?

Doesn’t really matter - sometimes managers have their preferences. He’s only 21 and has a massive ceiling, hence the huge contract allegedly on offer.

Chelsea have been a basketcase and wouldn't at all surprise if Maatsen was pushed purely because the board had spent £100m or whatever it was on Chilwell and Cucurella.

Not to mention we'd have all jumped at Cucurella before he moved to Chelsea. One of the first to show the Brighton system elevates players and that we shouldn't pay their high fees

Means nothing

Of course it does, Chelsea finished below us 2 years in a row and chasing rejects

Would people be thinking similar if we signed Matt Targett or West Ham or Brighton 3rd choice left back

Yes Chelsea are shit, this lad couldn't get a game for them and did ok in a different league and we are spending 35 million on him

Not quite true. After Chelsea's long deals the rules changed so that though you can sign a player on a longer contract it has to be amortised over a maximum 5 year period.

€35m is close to £30m so £6m a year for 5 years.

Edit - OK even that is wrong as it sounds like it is £35m not €s.  Anyway - let's call it £7.5m a year.  There's only so many different ways I can get a simple maths equation wrong!!!

Thankfully Emery's footballing brain is a bit more complex than Ian Maatsen must equal Matt Targett if he can't get in a side below us.

Do you know the reasons why Maatsen went out on loan? Chelsea do not have awful players, they were probably of the thinking let the youngest of the three go out and get some experience. He's a huge talent. I think his Dad said he wouldn't go back to Chelsea.

But that’s a massive under-performance by Chelsea. Let’s not start pretending like they are some mid-table squad of players!

Besides, let’s not start judging players by their deemed ‘squad status’ , we signed Arsenal’s backup goalkeeper to be our number one and that’s worked out ok right?

Can’t say I’ve seen much of him but if he’s good enough for Unai, that’s all I need to know.

He's a very good player potentially.

Great at Burnley in the division below in 22/23 and then stepped up very nicely in Dortmund.

By all accounts he was great in pre season for Chelsea last season and many were shocked that he didn't get a serious chance in their team once the season started. Seems Poch wanted more height in the team so he went with Colwill at LB.

We really need a young option at LB sooner or later so he ticks loads of boxes and if he genuinely wants to come then get him in.
