League fixtures are out, and updated on the OP.  We open home to perennial whipping boys Derby County, and we avoid Spurs this season in the regular season.

The 5 sides we don't play are Notts Forest, Southampton, Spurs, West Brom & West Ham.

That'll do. 3-1 and the easiest game we'll have on paper all season. Onwards and upwards. UTV.

Why's it the easiest game? Genuine question. I thought of Derby as a team that brought through genuinely good talent that built into their side maybe 3-4 years ago. A lot of players from their academy knocking about in the championship and of course Kellyman was with us. What happened to turn them into Perennial whipping boys?

Just because they've finished bottom of the u21 league 2 seasons on the trot, and 2 seasons ago they impressively managed 1 draw and 19 defeats in 20 games (see links to previous seasons at very top of OP). They are objectively the worst team in the division and they're on for a hat trick.

Yesterday's other results updated too. Looks like we might have finally drained the West Brom well :P

We started really well last night, and looked balanced side - although we drifted out of it as it went on and Derby had slightly the better of the second half.

I thought the new CB pairing looked solid against Jerry Yates (who played 43 games in league two last season and was signed for Derby's first team) Kerr Smith looks like he's developing into a proper centreback and could probably do with a loan now for his development and Amundsen-Day looked impressively calm and composed on his debut. Patterson had a difficult game at left back, but then he'd had a big day already. The keeper made a couple of good stops too, although he did receive a fair bit of advice on his distribution from Kadan Young.

At Right back I thought Kyrie Pierre was excellent - he's played in midfield for the past couple of season for us and found it difficult at times - he's not the biggest and he's sometimes overpowered in the middle of the park, but he was almost a revelation at right back, quick, dogged in defence and good on the ball. He might have found his position.

The midfield two were solid enough but are perhaps a little two alike and we could do with a more powerful player in there, a baby Onana if you will, they're both capable enough but late in the game they tired and we didn't seem to have many options on the bench for the holding positions. Allcock still looks like he's nineteen going on forty-two.

We started as a very proper 4-4-2 with Young and Broggio as proper wingers and they both really impressed in the opening 45 - they're very different players, Broggio preferring to run at a defence slow them, get defenders around him and then try to wriggle and bluster his way through with close control and determination and Young all about his pace and burst of power - and as a combination that really works.

Young can be confusing at times in that he sometimes plays like a player that's scared to be pigeonholed into just being one thing he's good at - but he is really, really good a that thing and I'd like to see him do more of it. If he gets one-on-one with a defender, his pace over ten yards and his strength will take him past almost anyone, he's brilliant at it and incredibly dangerous, he's got good feet and he can feint one way then blaze past a man - but sometimes he looks keen to show how good a sensible team player he is rather than trust his ability to do that. Anyways, he showed us that talent on a fair few occasions in the first half and also proved that he's got a final ball to go with it, setting Broggio up for the two goals.

Massive credit for the second goal has to go to Wilson in the build up he picked the ball up on half way with Young outside him, but rather than play a simple ball down the line for him, he pulled wide himself and then played the ball inside the fullback to put Young in a really dangerous position - a really clever bit of play.

The two forwards worked hard without really getting too much in terms of shots on goal, Moore in particular manfully held the ball up despite very often having an arm around his neck or two around his waist - he always puts the work in and I would imagine he's very much appreciated by his teammates.

The subs had very different days - Rico Richards came on full of energy and vim where  Jimoh looked like they'd just woken him up and he was still shaking the sleep out of his legs - both are more than capable of winning a game and Richards energy and determination was rewarded by a deserved goal to seal the points.

A word for Josep Gombau, who is worth the price of admission on his own - he has a very distinctive posture and a jutting lower jaw that gives him a sort of popeye feel and he chunters away to himself all game, he's fun to watch when the ball goes out of play and he's grumbling away to himself and waving his arms at imaginary shapes in the dugout.

A warm night, a sell out at Bodymoor and a win, lovely - welcome back football.
