Be a long shot, but I'd love Cancelo in our midfield, he's playing out wide tonight but think he'd be great centrally, Heard Barca are not buying him, so maybe a deal can be done with Man City.

So whats the wheeling and dealing so far this summer:

in: Barrenchea, Iling-Jr, Barkley, Maatsen, Dobbin - 75m ish?

Out: Luiz, Kellyman, Timmy, Sanson - 75m ish?

Looks like a £1 in, £1 out type of thing? (aka: sell to buy).

Ross Barkley is probably the player who directly replaces Douglas Luiz. Not sure Ross is intended for a permanent place in the team, but the style of play is reasonably similar. I therefore do not think we will buy a new Luiz. But rather a pure defensive midfielder, if we don't think Enzo can join the team, or preferably someone who can fill several roles. we lack a strong running player in the middle, someone who is good in both directions. We then lose something, either extreme defensive quality, which Bobacar has, or good offensive qualities, which Baena has. If we bring in another midfielder at all, I'm betting on a type ala Fofana or Gallagher, alternatively a pure copy of Kamara.

Otherwise, Bijola looks good, plays for Slovenia now, we are linked to him today.

Tielemans replaces Luiz internally. Barkley will be backup to Tielemans. Would still like another CM just to be on the safe side as Luiz hardly ever got injured, just missed three games last season through suspension.

I’m still hoping we can get Todibo. Doesn’t look like he’s going to Man Utd now. Would be a brilliant signing.

Have a feeling that Ratcliffe will keep pushing that and won’t let him come to rival like us.

Luiz and Tielemans, replaced by Tielemans and Barkley….feels like we’ve gone backwards in that dimension.  Added to that our successful period was Luiz and Kamara, so now we are unlikely to have Kamara until new year so our midfield has really weakened.  Maybe one more CM coming in will cut it but if that’s it then I think we will be weaker in the middle than last season which is a hard pill to swallow.

I think we'll need to get another one in, not sure if it will be DM or box to box player.

Personally would go for another DM as we just concede too many goals without Kamara so that needs to be the first priority.

Tielemans-McGinn will still be o.k for some games but asking a lot for Youri to be available every 3-4 days when the season gets into full swing in September-October.

So, current free agants of note:

Rabiot - CM, Hermoso - LB/CB, G.Rodriguez - DM, Iheanacho - ST, Martial - ST, Depay - ST, Miranda - LB, Spinazzola - LB, Matip - CB.

............a Brazilian called Wesley, big guy, might be worth a look?!?!

on a serious note, kasper Schmeichel is a free agent, he would be a good backup, still a good keeper, even at 37, on a 1 year contract...(better than Olsen).

We obviously want a box-to-box midfielder, we tried to sign McKennie, we've been reliably linked to Gallagher, with Tanswell commenting 'Emery loves him', and have been credited with an interest in Onana. I thought Chelsea letting Gallagher go was just talk, but now they've signed Dewsbury-Hall I wonder, as Romano first called could be one to watch

Yep

Ornstein (who is just about the only journalist who seems to get it right) said as much on a recent Athletic podcast - we'd identified a likely need to replace Luiz this summer, so we went for Tielemans quickly last summer and he's had a year to effectively bed in.
If it's an opinion, it's a very good one.
If that's actually true - we are a very well run club now.

I don't think I've ever seen a player deemed "not to be trusted" on the very same day he signs for the club. That's got to be a new record.

Not the first time he has signed for us and he has a long history before here.

im not putting him down as a starter in our only champions league season ever. No.
