Buying up others deadwood and being unable to shift them on the market. We are getting better at it, but it's fairly telling that we have picked up players that others don't covet, and/or have been overpaying wages. Not necessarily. We've also actually been pretty good at retaining players that we want to build our team around - we could have made profits on several of our key players had transfer profit been our key motivator. Emi, Konsa, Mings (pre-injury), Luiz, McGinn, Ramsey, Ollie would all have given pretty big profits (Kamara and Tielemanns more recently) and yet we've chosen to keep those players as they've helped us move from the Championship to the Champions League. We could have "done a Brighton" and sold these players but had to try and replace them with cheaper prospects (which worked for a while but maybe they are beginning to struggle to keep doing it). If you look at the teams on the list - you've got teams like City and Chelsea who can stockpile players and just turn over huge volumes (something we've not been in a position to do) and half the other teams have been relegated and forced to sell key players because they either can't afford to keep them in the Championship or those players want to play in the PL. There aren't many who are trying to do what we have done and build a squad to challenge the Top 6 (and then sustain that challenge). To be fair we've actually had to try and build four squads in the last 5 or 6 seasons - one to get promoted, one to avoid relegation, one to get to mid-table and then one to try and challenge the Top 6. Most of the "deadwood" (but not all) have helped move us to the next level. We might not have shown a transfer profit on AEG for example but the impact he had helped move us 2 steps up that ladder which created far more business value for the club. I think this goes back to Nas's comments the other day about PSR being anti-ambitious, anti-competitive and anti-sustainable. Ours has been a good model in terms of developing the team on the field into a competitive force. The fact that PSR now dictates that rich owners looking to break into the top 6 might have to sell players for "Profit and Sustainability" reasons is crazy. There's no current risk of Villa or their owners going bust. Our owners don't need to turn a short-term profit as they've got their eyes on the bigger long-term prize. They may have lost £105m in operating costs but this has been more than compensated for by the fact that the value of the business has grown significantly at the same time. In any other industry this would be pretty sensible leadership and prudent financial planning. But for some reason (and it doesn't take much to see the real motive) football has decided that forcing teams to sell assets to show a profit is more "sustainable" and more important than building a sound business. I get the feeling that buying clubs, just might be stringing out deals that are all but agreed, in the knowledge that we need a deal to go through quickly. Wouldn't be shocked if with 48 hours left to get deals over the line, we are faced with take it or leave it ultimatums, with Forest's situation last season being quoted as our other option. Perhaps clubs are looking to take advantage of our situation, or would rather enjoy seeing us have a points deduction.

Delphinho123
The dream scenario for me over the next few days is Mckennie dropping out of the Luiz deal and we either get Soule/Chiesa added or more money in the deal. On top of that, the Duran deal going through with Maatsen coming the other way. Feels achievable.

Chiesa probably not happening, he's linked with Bayern so i'd imagine he'd have his sights set on moving there. Edited June 19 by duke313
