Wol.
Stephen Exactly! Which brings us to our next question, which is: Why do bees buzz? Jo [presses buzzer, which fizzes] Stephen Jo. Jo Because they can. Alan They buzz so that when they're trapped in the living room, you know to open a window. Stephen It's a thought. Rich Is it to, um, to sound industrious? Stephen Yeah . . . Rich You have to look at bees as, uh, as aerospace workers. Stephen Right. Rich And, uh . . . stay with me . . . ! Stephen Yeah. It's all right. Rich When you're flying, you want to make a lot of noise. Because, uh, a quiet aircraft is, uh . . . [coughs] . . . crashing. Stephen Well . . . Fred I think it's, er . . . it's their . . . their knees knocking that makes the buzzing, isn't it? Because they hate flying. Terrified of flying. Stephen What is it that makes the noise? Alan The wings. [Forfeit] Stephen No. No, it isn't, I'm afraid. Alan Not the wings, then! Stephen No. It won't be the wings. Jo Ah . . . testicles? Alan Their little tiny mouths! [buzzes, arms spread like wings] Stephen Well, it is sort of little mouths; it's through what they breathe that are called spiracles. [runs his hands down his sides] They have them down the si— . . . down their sides, through which they breathe. All buzzing insects--bluebottles are the same . . . it's not the wings. Less than one percent of the buzz comes from their wings. Bees breathe through fourteen holes, er, along the sides of their bodies, and they're called spiracles, er, and each one has a valve to limit the flow of air, which the bee can do . . . and they can tune it, rather like a . . . a trumpeter . . . sort of using his lips. What's that called? Embrouchere or whatever it's called . . .
Chindie Posted March 9, 2009 VT Supporter Share Posted March 9, 2009 IIRC the buzzing noise made by most flying insects (including bees) isn't made by their wings, but them breathing. Why does that noise stop when they aren't flying then? I believe it's something to do with respiration happening far faster when they fly. They have openings down the side of their bodies that they breathe from. Apolgies if thats a little vague, it was one of those facts that stuck in my head after watching a tv show years ago. BOF Posted April 1, 2009 Moderator Share Posted April 1, 2009 This actually isn't useless but it's definitely interesting and 'information'. It is better to buy your petrol from an old petrol station in the morning or late at night, because you get more of it. Faskinating.

BOF Posted April 1, 2009 Moderator Share Posted April 1, 2009 As the day goes on and the temperature picks up, the petrol expands in the petrol station tanks. It's minimal but it makes a difference. So if you put 20 litres in at 2pm on a hot day that same 20 litres would be slightly less if you left it sit till 12 midnight. Older petrol stations have less well insulated tanks so in very cold weather the petrol actually contracts so by the time the 20 litres you put in at the pump warms a little you've just gained some extra miles. You're probably only talking a mile or 2 per fill but over a year that's better than a kick in the backside
The_Rev
I would imagine its down to it being hotter in the day and some of the petrol evaporating into a gas. In the morning or at night it will condense and return to a liquid state. I would also assume the amount you would gain or lose is insignificantly small. Wainy316
I had no idea until the other day that Nicolas Cage is a Coppola and nephew of Franci Ford. Changed his name because he wanted to make it on his own and not from the family name. This is probably common knowledge but I had no idea. The_Rev
Might be in this thread already, but the "What is your pornstar name?" is a bit of social engineering designed to help scammers find out peoples passwords. The pornstar name question asks people to combine the names of their first pet/first street/mothers maiden name (etc) to make them sound like a stage name for a porno actor. And of course, how many people use their first pet/first street/mothers maiden name as the secret question in the forgot your password? link on websites that are supposed to be secure? I would imagine 99.9% of people who have answered the question on the internet will be fine. Its just something to think about as its quite easy to give up potentially important information without even realising it.
