You name our defence

We have new and returning-from-injury players, and we need to decide how to use our resources best on the Villa defence. There are some strong personalities, there are leadership issues, there are player-development issues, etc.etc.  It's confusing. Glass half-full version is we have amazing and interesting and versatile choices of defenders. Glass half-empty version is ... what a mess. We have a mish-mash of players with overlapping skills and yet big weak spots remain, too -- and we may need to recruit (eg, an RB). But time is running out. You've got to figure this all out for us and make it coherent. How do you line up only our back line now?

Here's mine. It's for two main systems we'd use as needed:

Main system: Carlos-Mings-Torres with high line

Secondary system: Cash-Konsa-Mings-Moreno with more traditional defensive line

We start with Emi1, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne and we ease in Pau and Carlos and when back fit Moreno.

I think we won't see the best of Torres til second half of the season, if not next season. Think we'll look to toughen him up over the next 3-6 months.

Anyway;

Emi; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Moreno (when fit)

Torres and Carlos have to earn the shirt.

There will be plenty of games for everyone though, including Digne

Agree with this 100%

If fit and if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

the meanest defender in the league for the last 14/15 games, they have the perfect high line sorted

Cash        Ezri         Mings                Moreno

I too believe the 2 centre backs against Newcastle, the first game, should be Mings and Konsa.

Its about organisation and synchronisation and the understanding, that they have both built up with each other.

Individually I rate Torres and Carlos, highly, buy they have to have time, to integrate.....Carlos is like a new signing in effect and Torres needs to get in to the synchronisation of the team.

It will require amongst many things organisation and understanding against Newky.....and the players who served us well last season must be in the £ seats.

If we are to get anything, we must play as a team....and that means knowing what each other is doing.....The new boys, will take time.

and if you don't score, you can't win.....they are both valid values.

The great teams, have the ability to know when to do what and apply aggression/ intensity to each mode.

It is broke until around October isn't it 😉

Cash - konsa - torres - mings

Cash will push forward giving us a back 3, torres didn't look comfortable there yesterday, harsh on konsa but if mings doesn't play there and they want him in the middle then it'll be Carlos

We've had worse problems that's for sure, especially if we get a high potential young RB in too, we've got plenty of options

Yes, think it's wise to give Pau and Carlos time to adjust as neither of them have played many minutes under Unai

Emery might love Torres but he loves winning more. Newcastle needs our most reliable defence  . Mings and Konsa are 3 and a half years into their partnership now with little competition. Theres been good and bad times with them but someone is going to have to be really really good to displace one or both from our starting 11. They compliment each other perfectly.

Konsa is the most gifted attacking midfielder in the league, wasted at CB.....he has the running grace of an andalusion thoroubred and the finishing prowess of Robert Lewandowski.....Thomas Franks said.
