The colours are a little off to me, mostly the blue. Overall this is a really good job and a great idea, I love the shape you've gone for and it's well presented! And it showcases how a badge fits into a full design identity. Unique shield shape, yellow lion, simple but elegant badge design, excellent font choices, no star, wider design framework -- this is one of the best fan-made designs I've seen. I love that mini-crest too -- would look excellent and instantly recognisable as a profile photo on the socials.
Muller Yogurt Long Sleever
Appreciate the comments, thanks all. Obviously the colours are subjective and may be showing up differently on different screens - I've just gone with my preference of a core mix that I think lets us do heritage and more modern vibrancy. Which I've just realised pretty much match the circa 1994 scarf I wore to the match today. Graham Fenton vibes. Always been in the crest-over-circle camp - I could get into an A and V angular brand identity rant, how I think we should always have a V-neck shirt.. but we've all got lives to lead. I do think they were on to something with the gas lamp design, just didn't like the execution. And I'm all for the lion facing right - progression! Ultimately just want our beautiful club to have a confident, authentic, ownable visual identity deserving of it, both for generations of fans and for our global profile. It's tough and not everyone will agree on it, I hope whatever is being lined up is something the majority of us can get behind.
Davkaus
Where's this focus on the gas lamp come from? I'd literally never heard of it as a story until the last badge selection.

Mark Albrighton Posted December 30, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted December 30, 2023 The club did put the lamp monument thing outside the Holte in 2014 to mark the 140 anniversary. So it’s not completely out of the blue. There has been some prior acknowledgment. I quite like it incorporated in the otherwise circular design, happy to have a little quirky detail to make it more interesting. It doesn’t sound like it’s happening though.

Quote " Legend has it that on 21st November 1874, four members of the Wesleyan Chapel male adult bible class met under a gas lamp in Heathfield Road to form Aston Villa. The four founding fathers of our club are believed to be Jack Hughes, William H Price, George Matthews and William H Scattergood. " Even I've always known this story? Wouldn't say it's totally irrelevant. Think there is even a Villa Forum/Site called " Under a gaslit lamp " which has been around for a while. Chindie Posted December 30, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted December 30, 2023 I know it's not completely irrelevant but it's an element of the origin story that basically isn't important and is chucked in as a bit of evocative imagery - if they had met around a bin or next to a drainpipe outside a pub we wouldn't hear about it. It's not an important 'thing' to our story and it's always felt a little forced in trying to make it a thing - nobody really cares or thinks it's an important part of what Aston Villa is - it never has been. 1

est1874
So has the club decided to go back to the drawing board again after all the negative reaction to supposed "leaks"? Please let this all be over soon.

Popular Post OutByEaster? Posted January 3 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted January 3 Just on the process of this and the consultation, I think there are some things worth noting. Firstly, it wasn't the case that the FAB group 'reported the club to the FA' on the lack of consultation, that's a bit of a newspaper exaggeration - one member of the group contacted the FA for clarification and the club then communicated that they'd already had assurance from the FA that the right rules had been followed. The fact they asked in advance probably tells its own story, but the club have consulted and the FA are happy they've done so. It's quite a different approach from the first consultation that produced this seasons shirt badge, but it's sufficient. I also think it's worth keeping in mind that the FA rules on heritage protection are in place for some quite specific reasons - they're there to make sure that an owner doesn't come in and change the colours of a badge or a team because they want to. They're fashioned to an extent to prevent a repeat of the Cardiff fiasco where a new owner decided red was a lucky colour so changed their shirts from blue to red. There was a similar furore over changes to Everton's crest where the motto was removed. But importantly, there's absolutely no suggestion, either in the surveys, or in the feedback from people in the meeting that have seen the badge that our club are about to do that - there's nothing radical in this design, it doesn't have a ship on it, it's not purple and it doesn't include the word "awesome" it'll be a fairly sensible update on what we have from what I can gather, in claret and blue, with our name on it and a star - at worst, a little underwhelming. None of that suggests to me that the club are doing anything that should concern the FA heritage protection squad and all of which reflects the October survey, albeit perhaps in contradiction to the results of the previous consultation. I think where it gets difficult is in how well we approached those rules last time we did this; in the consultation for the current shirt badge. From the outset the club worked really closely with the FA and fans and ensured that the design team followed the guidelines that resulted from those conversations. I remember Mr Purslow telling us that he wanted Villa to be a club that set standards that would be recognised as doing things the 'right' way - as the first club to do so, we were told that he wanted to work with the FA under the heritage guidelines in a way that they and other clubs could use as a template for the right way to do things going forward. They consulted with at least three different groups of fans, with three or four two-hour meetings with each group, in rooms with the design team from early process drawings through to the final two options, there was a detailed survey and the designs were affected by supporter opinion - with the final stage being a choice made by fans. I think it's a real shame that the launch of that badge and the attendant information on the way it had been created didn't take place - as a process, it was exemplary. What we've done then is gone out and got the world's number one crest man and quite frankly, it appears that man might well be a lion that does not concern himself too much with the opinions of sheep. Whether we wanted the man, so accepted that he wanted to change the crest, or whether the owners were unsatisfied with the crest at the end of the process, so sought out the man, we'll never know - but what we have now is a more limited consultation and a badge produced with a lot more direct input by someone who has a track record of being able to make a success of these things. From what I can gather, the result is not mad, it's an Aston Villa crest in Aston Villa colours - I'm sure as is the way with these things, that some will love it and some will hate it, but it will be made of 'Villa' ingredients and hopefully, in time, it will become 'us'.
