It is certainly an interesting dynamic. They could be the 2nd highest-spending league in the world very shortly. Who knows if it is remotely sustainable at all or a fad.

Great news for players and agents. Uncertain for everyone else. Not good for human rights.

Mendes when the transfer window closes.

It's following the path of most other sportswashing projects. First derision as has beens and might be are signed and paid way above market value. Then they get marque signings. Then they start to dominate and everyone gets in a rush to get into bed with them and to hell with all ethics.

It's sustainable as it has PIF bankrolling it and they have about 800 billion on the hip. And as long as we keep buying oil they'll always have that to spend

Yep. People questioning the wealth of the Saudi state may be the maddest thing on this whole site. Seen it a few times now and it always makes me smile. Saudi Arabia are not going to run out of money, they are not going to stop and they are not remotely bothered about FFP (as its out of UEFA) or any other rules we have in place either now or in the future.

They are the future of the game whether we like it or not. Whatever Super League ends up materialising will certainly include Saudi clubs.

They aren't going away.

Jordan Henderson considering moving to Saudi league with gerrard’s al ettifaq said to be keen on him.

can see this one happening as Liverpool signed sboslai and Macallister and Henderson Dosent seem to be as important to the team as he once was

I'd be very disappointed in him if he does. Always thought he had more to his character than that.

The retort to this will be that Saudi's PIF is invested in a lot of businesses beyond Newcastle United, including Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, Uber, Take Two, Live Nation Entertainment, Meta, Starbucks, PayPal, Microsoft, Salesforce, Carnival, Costco, Home Depot, Adobe, Alphabet, Amazon, Zoom, FedEx, Walmart, Pinterest and many many others, and if you manage to live a life of avoiding ever interacting with any of these businesses fair enough but I think it's probably quite hard to do so. The question then is if we don't worry about morality when it comes to investing in the products and services we all use everyday, what makes football special?

Football is special because it has supporters rather than customers. It also has live TV coverage and commentary of its business.

If I watch a good film on Netflix, the camera doesn't pan to MBS in a director's chair waving to the crew accompanied by a voiceover of how all this is only possible because of him.

If Costco do a 2-for-1 offer on car tyres we don't see hundreds of people dressed as sheikhs and waving Saudi flags in the car park.

The companies listed are for the financial benefit of the PIF, with some other advantages thrown in for good measure.

Sport is all about PR and marketing. They're not going to get a positive financial ROI on Newcastle or this league of theirs, but they'll get a very different ROI which is arguably worth more than whatever it costs them.
