Popular Post markavfc40
I'd take a cup win all day long over qualification for Champions League. My eldest daughter is 26 this year and has had a season ticket since she was 5 and has never seen us win anything. There are thousands of supporters like her. 28 years since we last won a trophy so we haven't won a trophy this century. SHA have won a trophy more recently than us and I have some of them often remind me of that fact. Champions league qualification doesn't guarantee future success. Far from it. A trophy in the cabinet can never be taken away though and will be something we'll talk about until our last breaths. 10
villarule123 Posted April 17 VT Supporter Share Posted April 17 I don't mind admitting that I almost obsess over getting CL qualification. I would absolutely love to win the UCL and break our trophy duck, but I'm equally as excited about being in the CL. The UCL is a newly formed competition, great to win, but the CL is the tournament I've been watching since I started getting into football and my dream as a Villa fan is to experience that song at VP just once.

Would you rather watch Real Madrid at Villa Park, or see Aston Villa lift a trophy is the more accurate analysis. You go for the former, I'd rather the latter.
Sulberto21
A club like Aston Villa needs CL football AND to win trophies. The manager we have is an expert at both.

Harvey Barnes was £44m Livremento was £32m + £8m and they now have to pay Chelsea something like £28m for Lewis Hall Gordon was £40m in the Jan window and could well have been bought with CL money in mind ? They could have signed those players anyway without CL, they spent more the season before.
Pongo Waring
Villa can reach the Semi's of the UCL next season. This Dortmund team isn't great all and they did it.

If Don Unai is our manager for the next five seasons and we qualify for CL at least 3 times then I think we’ll definitely make Semi’s at least once. Then anything can happen at that stage.
The_Steve
Regarding Newcastle’s CL money The club said that it expected the Champions League to yield at least £37m, as there will also be additional revenue from gate receipts Etc https://swissramble.substack.com/p/newcastle-united-finances-202223 They were spending obscene amounts before and after and barely selling players, hence their FFP issues now.

FFS. So the whole coefficient thing will be used every season to see who gets that extra place? My interest in it has just completely fallen off a cliff. This is the reality. 5 games left and 4th is ours for the taking. If we don't take it then we can't blame Man Utd. or West Ham or Liverpool. Popular Post Pez1974
Like others - I don't get the 'which one?' We have 5 games left in the league - if we can't muster enough points from this position to stay in 4th, we don't deserve it. And our main competition is Bottlejob FC, who have harder fixtures on paper. We have a lead going into the 2nd leg of a QF in Europe, having just kept a clean sheet against PL title challengers. Then 3 more games to win it. And from winning it would come a 26 point co-efficient for next season, which would help us get a better draw, and means we can build on that ranking in the following seasons. This is why the top cubs stay there - see the draw that Newcastle got in their first season back in the CL because they had no ranking points (just those that come with being a PL club). (And I know this is boring to many, but it is the reality of being able to compete consistently at the top of Europe) I've seen about players being tired, but it's a maximum of 9 games now. McGinn has just had a rest period, so too Luiz. Watkins can just keep going. We seem to be good at rotating other positions when necessary because Unai is a genius. This is our moment to take a huge step up - we have to do both.

I don’t really care about a 3rd rate euro cup if im being honest. And i hate FA cup as well. 3rd rate euro cup downplays it massively, finishing 7th in the prem or winning league cup Is hard enough and that's just to qualify for it. Then for us to win it we will have had to have beaten Ajax, Lille and potentially Fenebache and Fiorentina, some big clubs there. I've enjoyed every moment of this competition so far and would love to go on to win it.
