AshVilla
I'm still not confident on Man City dealing with Real Madrid. Real Madrid always seem to have the rub of the green with reffing decisions and are at home. No Walker as well will be a loss for them when it comes to dealing with Vini Jnr e.t.c. StefanAVFC Posted April 9 VT Supporter Share Posted April 9 In the cooefficient race we got screwed in 2 areas. First was Newcastle and United going out in 4th in the group, meaning no further involvement. The second was all of the rest of the English teams qualifying as group winners, meaning no playoff game, and a missed opportunity for points. Arsenal are the key team now, if they win it's pretty much done for Germany.

That should be more than enough to see it through.

Vive_La_Villa
I think every team goes through apart from West Ham. I haven’t seen Bayer play but assuming they must be pretty good to be topping the table 16 points clear with no defeats all season.

RichW
Only just realised both Arsenal and Man City play tonight, thought one was tomorrow night. Looks like I'm watching Atletico Madrid v Dortmund tomorrow.

randy_69
If villa finish 5th and qualify for champions league, does anyone know if we will need to go through a playoff stage or straight to new style group stage? Just thinking about holiday plans!!!!

Teams still have to qualify for it, do you think the Estonian champions are just getting straight into the league stage? That must have been a high year The 09/10 season we also got to the league cup final and FA cup SF (would've been a final v relegated Pompey....) so overall it was our most successful league season under O'Neill. What hurt us was the annual March collapse under MON where we drew 2-2 at home to Wolves, 1-1 at home to Sunderland, 0-0 at Stoke and then lost 7-1 at Chelsea which messed up our GD. That was all in a five game spell and meant we were playing catch up. Spurs were very much like they are now, all out attacking. What did for us is they had Arsenal and Chelsea at home within 3 days and won them both. At the time I don't think they'd beaten either team in the prem for about 7-8 years but you had Danny Rose volleying in from the edge of the box in the Arsenal game. MON should've just left a week after the final game and then he'd have been more fondly remembered than he is as that was a very exciting season and we just fell narrowly short. Also the first season after we'd lost Laursen and Barry who were lynchpins in the previous years. Edited April 9 by VillaChris
VILLAMARV
No, there are no qualifying games for the new Champions League format for any English teams, either the top 4 or the extra coefficient places or potential Europa League winners https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024–25_UEFA_Champions_League#League_stage 1

VillaChris
Talking of the O'Neill era..... The new format is pretty much the same as when we played Uefa cup under him. For some reason with 5 teams in a group we just played Ajax at VP and Hamburg in Germany when playing each home and away would've been very exciting. Think they changed it back to home and away ties two seasons later. I actually think the current CL format works pretty well other than 3rd place dropping down into the Europa which at least has been scrapped. I certainly wouldn't be changing it to playing more games just to see less teams eliminated but then that's how Football is going, playing more meaningless games for little jeopardy. No one is that bothered you don't get the big duels right at the start of the competition compared to tonight surely? Bit annoying if we get glamour ties v Real Madrid, AC Milan and Bayern Munich and don't get one away trip out of that!
