Popular Post JPJCB
Just while we’re still on Jermaine Jenas, I’ll never forget a BBC article from 2016 where he recollected his experience of the January transfer window. Specifically this quote: “My loan move to Aston Villa in August 2011 and transfer to QPR in January 2013 were on transfer deadline days too. I joined Martin O'Neill at Villa who had been chasing me for a long time and I was going to be one of the bigger players at the club.” O’Neill left the club over a year before his arrival so either he’s even thicker than he comes across or (more likely) he lies in his articles to make himself look better.

Last year was about 800k *all in Euros* for a draw and 2.8 mill a win in each group game. Plus you get about 15 mill for reaching the group stages. Then each further stage u get more money on a bigger scale. The winner won 20 mill for winning the final last year. A perfect run to the final winning every game would be 80 million. And then all your gate receipts merch etc etc.
WHY
We need United and Newcastle to fall into the Europa League, it will improve our chances imo. Not sure if this will hinder the chance of getting an extra CL place though.
Tomaszk
Four games in 10 days coming up. Tough run. Throw everything at the first two IMO. Defeat to City and Arsenal isn't a disaster at all if we've beaten Legia and Bournemouth.

So EL and ECL count towards it as well.

This might not be so bad as it sounds though and may well mean we are on course to a CL spot. The 8 like-for-like games that Emery also managed last season achieved 19 points both this season and last, so a pretty high 2.38ppg We have 17 games left that Emery also managed last season (or equivalent). We picked up 30 points from those same games last season, so 1.76ppg. Add that to our current total and we are at 58 points. Our 2 point gain this season comes from 9 points in 5 fixtures that earned 7 points last season before Emery's arrival. The remaining 8 fixtures of this kind only brought 5 points last season so plenty of opportunity for gain. So to get to 70 points we only need to equal Emery's like-for-like record last season and then get 12 points from the remaining 8 fixtures he did not take charge of last season. Those 8 fixtures: bou(0) MNC(1) shu(1, replacing Leeds) ful(0) BRE(3) ars(0) CHE(0) cry(0) I feel like we'd be favourites in 5/6 of those 8 games this season under Emery, so 12 points should be more than achievable. I'll allow it. Absolutely not beyond us to do them. I think as the third game in 7 days, it'll be very tough.

All English teams getting out of groups, even if only to Europa, would be ideal. Also the Spanish and Germany teams dropping asap as think they'll be biggest threat. JoshVilla
The good thing is that, even if we come up short against Bournemouth, there's a good chance we'll still be 4th as City are pretty likely to beat that Spurs side at home. Ideal situation would be a draw in the Utd v Newcastle game, then a win at Bournemouth would give us a nice 5 point cushion between us and 5th going into the Arsenal & City games.

Tomaszk
Champions League really is a game changer. I believe we can finish 5th. I think that's the ceiling. 4th or above will be one of the all-time great PL seasons IMO bearing in mind the levels of competition.
