Ah, I assumed the 4-2-2-2 was his preferred formation. I actually like a 4-3-3.

ye, Emery apparently said that he prefers a 433/4141 (the assumption is he means this "if" he has the quality of players to make the most out of those formations).

He said that he likes to use 442 the underdog type teams as it offers better defensive stability etc.

I would think the Asensio links to us are just to generate some interest for other clubs. But then he’s a Mendes client and I think we have a good relationship with him at the moment so don’t think he’d mess us about.

He’s a Spanish international in his prime who plays for Real Madrid, don’t think he’s going to be wanting for potential clubs to join.

Surprised so many people would be disappointed in signing Harvey Barnes.  He's exactly the type of player we need IMO.

Seduced by the Pedro Gonçalves rumours, probably. Barnes would be a good signing if they’re BS.

I think reading the the thread that most are put off by this £50m figure that seems to have been plucked from thin air.

I too would be horrified if we paid that. I think it’s rubbish though, no one is paying that, especially if/when they get relagated.

Makes perfect sense tbf. I did wonder if things would change based on incoming players. So many managers make players player their formation regardless. The fact Emery builds his based on the squad shows how impressive his thinking is. We’ve had so many managers putting square pegs in round holes.

Peak VT

We don't have an open thread on Marco Asensio yet who has been the only player so far linked by an actual T1 journalist.

Meanwhile, there are 9,039,475 threads open for players linked by 'outlets' such as David Rudisha's Nan and PornHub, including a thread for Lionel Messi 🤣

Barnes constantly puts up good numbers. If Leicester drop and we can get a decent deal on him then I'm all for it, improves our side massively.

Who does he come in for?  I don't think he is any better than Ramsey or McGinn - acknowledging that they are all different types of player.  Probably offers options from the bench so he adds depth - but (with the exception of GK) we should be signing players that will start in the first XI so that our bench is strengthened by featuring players that have been regulars this season.

I've seen a lot of Leicester this season.  He has a lot of horrifically bad performances in between the games where he scores 2-3 goals against bottom half sides.  He always goes missing in games against the Top 6 and you can't blame that on Leicester's defense every time.

Harvey Barnes would be an excellent purchase if the Premier League season was 6 matches long, unfortunately it's 38, so it wouldn't be an excellent purchase...

this is going to be one of those windows isnt it, where we get linked with Thuram, Lukaku, Asensio, Kang-In, Guendouzi, Vlahovic, Merino, Williams, Goncalves, P.Torres, F.Torres, Baena, Ugarte, Lo Celso........

Then we end up with a Lange 2 for 1 special from Belgium... 😆

Someone on here posted that he has very surprisingly low chance creation numbers.

Flat track bully imo, will rip a few teams apart a season and then appear invisible for the rest of it...

He’s literally only scored two goals once this season, against top half Fulham. Everything else has been single goals against us, Brighton, Chelsea*, Brentford and Tottenham (and then yes, some absolute dross). So while you are totally entitled to think he is rubbish, this description just isn’t accurate at all.

*tbf could be rolled into the dross.
