Do people actually watch Portuguese football or South American international games, or is Ugarte good on certain computer game(s)/rated by pundits?

I do, but only after hearing about someone or spotting them as different on the stats websites.

I am not really concerned about any particular individual, but more the general elevation of quality and depth in the squad.

Experience suggests the hype/expectation is generally always inflated, there have been countless players we missed out on who simply haven’t set the world on fire. The only recent exception I would suggest is Bentancur, who genuinely would have improved us and looks great value.

I can confirm we're not actually interested in Ugarte, we've already got Luiz and Kamara who play in his position, and whilst it might be good to have someone as good or even better than those two, we're not Real Madrid and have players that good or better on the bench, so unless one of Luiz or Kamara is sold we won't be signing him, also we aren't going to suddenly decide to play Luiz on the left wing, when he's arguably been our best player in his current position.

Yes I'm reliably informed that we need strong competition in every position, but have to be realistic.

If you want to compete with the big sides you need options and rotation. Have ugarde and kamara would be unreal. Not even arsenal would have two dm like that.

In some games we might even play the both of them

I dont know why, but looking at both our games the weekend, and how Klopp likes to play, I've got a sneaky feeling they'll try and make a move for our beautiful big-arsed McGinniesta.

They might, but they would get an appropriate response now, if they did. We don't sell to our rivals;). They are more likely to go for MacAllister, Gravenberch and/or Mount, I suspect.

Add Roma Brazilian CB Roger Ibañez to the list of players media are linking us to. Anyone got anything on him? Not watched him much but I trust Emery would be able to get a tune out of him.

I love his guitars.

Neils breakdown... bloody hell, the stats and attributes make him look superior to every midfielder we have already by a distance, this includes Kamara! ( albeit in an inferior League mind )

I heard of Ugarte in Football Manager before, yes. But I have also watched a few Primeria Liga games + some Europa League games. He was always very solid and dependable in those games. Also, he is statistically one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe.

Football manager mate! Been signing him for about 3 years now but obviously harder since sporting got him

You get him or florentino Luis from benfica

That said my current FM save, top of the league in 2026/27 I've got kamara, xavi Simmons, illic, gourna douath and Alex Scott, id love it if we got Scott at a good price

Uruguay also have a FM wonderkid striker called arezo

Alex Scott plays for Man Utd on my Latvia save - currently 31 years old with 102 England caps.

I'm pretty sure most had never even heard of Ugarte up until a few weeks ago, just like last summer when many decided Nunes was an amazing player, but I used search function and no had barely even mentioned him on this site before he was linked to Wolves in the media.

Considering we'd need to be a Real Madrid level club in your eyes to realistically sign him then it probably stands to reason that he wouldn't have been mentioned too frequently on this forum as a realistic possibility to sign. However if you have as much as a passing interest in European football, from watching it to reading about it then you've probably heard about him earlier than just a few weeks ago given that he plays - very well - for one of the most spoken about clubs on the continent in terms of their coaching and playing staff.

It's not like people have just randomly started waffling on about him anyway. He's been speculated about and this is the speculation thread, ergo his name will probably start to get mentioned more as a consequence.

I didn't say we need to be Real Madrid to sign him per se, I said we're not at the level where we can have players as good as him as well as Luiz and Kamara, and be in a position to keep them all happy, it's very unlikely to happen, we aren't going to drop either of Luiz or Kamara for him, and we aren't going to sign him for £50m or whatever it would take just to be an upgrade on Dendoncker.

We probably won't even be in the market for a specialist DM, if we sign Guendouzi he can play both that position and as a box-to-box midfielder.

Ibrahima Bamba, Kamara, Luiz, Dendoncker, and Iroegbunam will be very good options for the two holding positions, and others like Chambers, Ramsey, McGInn, and Guendouzi if he signs that can play there too.

Big money will be spent elsewhere.

Luiz could definitely play in the McGinn / Ramsey role.  Or it wouldn't surprise me if we played a midfield three of players like Ugarte, Kamara and Luiz - because that would allow us to have the fourth midfielder as a more attacking player and it would also give us cover for our full-back(s) to bomb forward to provide width - without being massively exposed on the counter if we lose the ball.  If Guendouzi is an option then I don't think it is a big leap to suggest that Ugarte could fit in as well if not better - and then Luiz plays the more "roaming" role that you suggest.  Also from the FYLoPM video above, Ugarte's stats in terms of progressing the ball aren't bad either and his heatmap isn't that of an out and out defensive midfielder - he pretty much covers the whole the pitch between the two penalty areas.

To be honest if it was a choice of Ugarte, Kamara and Luiz or Guendouzi, Kamara and Luiz - I think the former would be stronger and would give us a hugely impressive platform in the middle of the pitch around which to build our defence and our attack.  I mean that trio is basically a midfield of three £60 million+ players in their early 20s and would be one of the strongest in the league - I think only behind Man City.

I would't be surprised if Ugarte ended up at Wolves as Neves replacement, although I did read that they're going to try and move away from Mendes reliance and won't be spending more than £20m on any one player, so maybe not.

I think he'd want to go to a team in the top half as a minimum.  I know it is only 1 season but people's (players / agents) memories are short and it would be hard for Wolves to sell themselves even with their Portuguese links.

what level is the Portuguese league?

Similar to championship level? (but a more technical, less physical version?)

The top teams are at least mid table PL. Depending on season as they get bought to pieces on a seasonal basis. Great scouting and good academies.

According to current FIFA rankings it is the eighth best league in World football.

Three places above the Championship and one below the Brasileiro.
