Chindie Posted September 28, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted September 28, 2023 Favourite thing about Gambon - didn't like any of the nonsense that surrounded being famous, and used to actively take the piss out of it. Most famously that lead him to just lying in interviews, making shit up in increasingly absurd scenarios to see how far he could take things. You'd have done hapless interviewer given 10 minutes with him to discuss his latest film and Gambon would just go off on some flight of fancy about how he was dating some African princess.

veloman
I too thought he was a great actor. Never seen any Harry Potter but I thought he was superb in "Maigret". Never thought anyone would get near to Rupert Davies - but (IMO) he did.
theunderstudy
Michael Gambon gone, such a shame. So many great performances. For some reason his role in Layer Cake is jumping to mind for me

Chindie Posted September 28, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted September 28, 2023 He's also great in underrated modern Western Open Range. It's a small role and hardly nuanced but he has a riot chewing the scenery as 'Oirish' rancher.

Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall, Annette Benning, Diego Luna and as you say, Gambon with the worlds worst Irish accent but you can forgive it because he's just such an outlandish character that you wish he was onscreen more. Mark Albrighton Posted October 2, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted October 2, 2023 Franny Lee is one I thought went years ago. But it’s possible (probable) that I’m thinking of Alan Ball.
meregreen
Franny Lee. For those of us old enough to remember him, a great player. Quite volatile, his punch up with Norman Hunter was a classic. I’m feeling old again.

Overrated, for my money. Enjoyable enough, but if it had come out in the 1950s it would have rated as a 'B' movie. Now, speaking as something of a connoisseur of them, there is absolutely nothing wrong with B-westerns - but there is nothing here that makes it stand out from the crowd. The fact that it is always showing on one of the 'high numbered' TV channels says it all. Edited October 2, 2023 by mjmooney

Was in Lock Stock Ah feck, Jake was a nice fella. Was also the waiter with the dreadlocks in GBH and the presenter of Saturday morning kids TV Prog, "It's Wicked" amongst many other things Last I heard of him he was working with Liverpool Film Studios and a company called LA Productions and that was only a couple of years ago. I think he was teaching budding actors as part of his role But anyway, when he first started making money with his acting, he bought a rather famous Liverpool boozer called Peter Kavannaghs. He and his family ran it for a good few years, he did it so he'd always have an income when there was no acting work coming in but it was (and still is) a proper local community pub but one with loads of character, he was perfect for it. It was my local for a good few years and Jake also used to come down my club quite a bit. Just a nice, typical scouser, every sentence a joke and a laugh kind of guy 56 is no age at all
