I don't believe that. He's said time and again he wants to stay. At least if he does decide to go, we'll make a hell of a profit. Popular Post TomC
OK, so now that my nerves have calmed down a bit... That was a great match, the best final since at least 1986. Penalties are a stupid way to decide a world championship; I know they did away with replays because the broadcasters didn't like the unpredictability of it, but you would think that the broadcasters would be perfectly happy to have replays at least for the final. That's only one unpredictable match and is a lot of advertising money that they could have for a match that literally the whole world would watch. The first 55-60 minutes of the match were all Argentina. Messi gets all the attention, but it's their midfield that has been making the difference. No big star names, but they have been really impressive for the last few matches. They dominated a bigger-name midfield against Croatia and dominated a bigger-name midfield for a long stretch here. (Marking Griezmann right out of the match was impressive.) They broke up everything France did and played impressive one-touch football. MacAllister and Enzo Fernandez are only 23 and 21 and are about to be stars. France started targeting the Argentine left at the beginning of the second half, surmising that Di Maria's old legs weren't tracking back. Mbappé even showed up there a couple times, not his usual position. Taking Di Maria out made sense to shore up that side, but also took some sting out of the attack. The bigger change was France switching from 3 to 4 (and sometimes 5) in midfield, and Argentina not subbing for tired legs. Suddenly, France was controlling midfield. Deschamps knew what he was doing. On the other side, I always say that Villa need to be careful not to burn out Ramsey's young legs. You have to wonder if young MacAllister and Fernandez were really up to 7 matches in barely over 3 weeks. They faded. And you have to wonder why Argentina didn't sub sooner. A theme in this World Cup has been the deprecation of tiki taka (see what happened to Spain) and the return of the man with the ball running at defenders. Di Maria wasn't afraid to take anybody on, which made a big difference for Argentina, and several French players (including Mbappé of course) started running at the Argentines later in the game. It made for exciting football. It's a positive development. Extra time was absolutely nerve wracking. Either side could have won. That said, I think that Argentina had the better of the match by a little bit and deserved to win. Very very happy for Emi!

It sounds absurd, but I think I probably agree. He's not the impregnable wall he was a year ago, and I doubt we'll get a better keeper, but his worth right now is probably more than he really justifies
