On a separate note Tesla are recalling 363.000 self driving cars due to risk of crashing.

That's a pretty misleading quote. It isn't a recall it's a software update.

Also "risk of crashing" is being used very broadly. The Federal agency that handles road safety has found some instances when, in full driverless mode, the car can't distinguish certain turn lanes from regular lanes. Tesla drivers are told to always have their hands on the wheel and pay attention, by Tesla! The driverless software is still in Beta and anyone that drives on it while taking forty winks or reading a book is an idiot. (Although I quite often see people driving regular cars reading books 🤦‍♂️)

I know it's de rigueur to hate on Tesla on these boards and Musk has been a complete c**k for the last 6 months but I still think we should stick to some sort of reality when slagging them off!

It's off topic in this thread, but as much as people dislike Musk, I haven't seen the "hate" for Tesla.

All, stop talking about Tesla in this thread.

The thing is, Musk bought Twitter for well over the odds and now he’s trying to mould it into something resembling a profitable business to protect his investment.

Facebook made Zuckerberg a billionaire, it owes him nothing. Why doesn’t he introduce this verified status thing for free? Or at least much less that $120 a year? It looks a bit greedy.

Because Facebook has a similar problem to Twitter but to a much lesser extent. They need to find a long term steady revenue model, ad revenue is volatile and many younger people don't use Facebook or aren't interested in it. Plus it could just be another way to make easy money. It doesn't cost them anything to hand out blue ticks, so if they can get revenue from it why not?

I remember the good old days when it was drummed into people that published internet content was permanent,  and it was a good idea to use pseudonyms and embrace the anonymity of the internet.

Now some people will be sending their passports to Facebook to verify themselves.

As someone who has never used Twitter or Facebook, I can't understand why disconsolate Twitter users don't move over to Facebook, where they are much more open to censorship, according to their Wiki entry?

70% of American adults are on Facebook, versus only 17% on Twitter.

They aren't remotely similar

So what about Reddit and Discord?

Reddit, is like a huge Villa Talk. It is essentially a massive forum with subreddits for any subject you care to think of, be as bizarre as you want, it'll exist. Each forum is moderated by usually the creator of the sub and a handpicked team, each sub has it's own rules. It's anarchic and much better IMO that any of the other social media

Discord, don't quote me as I never use it, is more like Messenger / Whatsapp

Just as a matter of interest, is the Twitter format copyrighted?

There's a lot of problems with this model though. Some of these big subs hand pick the same team as everyone else, some of them moderate dozens of the biggest subs, and hold their grudges and misuse their power across the whole site, and while in theory you can fork off and create alternative subs, once one has gained the critical mass and becomes the defacto sub for that content, it's very hard to compete. What it's essentially ended up with on the big subs is the same unaccountable, all-powerful mods, but instead of paid employees of the big tech companies, it's some power-hungry volunteers. Any big sub falls into this trap eventually, and the defaults are absolute cesspits run by karma farmers and megalomaniacs.

Plenty of good content and good communities, it's just hidden well far away from the front page
