Just wondering. Regular bid = Calm, cool collective bid on the 1-10th January. Early in the window. Panic Bid = anything after the 23rd of Jan to the last day of the window. The similarities between them right at this moment and us when we were doomed to go down are really really stark. Good manager leaves on eve of new season a few years back (MoN/Ancellotti) and never properly replaced. Only just avoid relegation the season before after consecutive years of decay. Sell star striker in run up to season. Sporadic and pattern less recruitment in the summer on a shoestring budget. Don't properly replace star striker who kept them up last season. Owner loses touch and alienates the fan base. Sack manager halfway through the season and will inevitably make a horrible decision on a replacement as there are no good managers who will touch with a bargepole. Losing mentality endemic within the team. They are down, make no bones about it. Edited January 24, 2023 by Steero113

Indigo
Maybe I'm just more privy to it being a Villa fan but it does seem weird that in the age of being in contact with players before even bidding for them that it's a semi-often occurrence for Villa to be turned down by them. I suppose it's just been said that we were prepared to pay the buy-out rather than outright offered so maybe that is the case. Interesting one all the same. With the profile of player Williams is it would have been difficult to manage anyway, but the added context of him being Basque/playing for Athletic Club introduces added complications. Encouraging that the funds are there anyway as you'd imagine there will be other targets of a similar profile. Just wondering. A panic bid is often misinterpreted and is indeed in reality a cheeky bid, which in turn is the prelude to an ambitious swoop , leading to an audacious purchase if successful. NSWE never panic but when the mood takes them they can be cheeky. They would never shout at a receptionist but may take Alex Moreno with them to help with distracting her and add to the general cheekiness of the bid. It’s up to Alex if he wants to be audacious or not. A huge improvement on a cup of PG with Slippy G. 1

Watkins is better playing off the last man and running the channels. Fair enough, but the problem is that Watkins doesn't finish enough opportunities doing what he does. If we buy someone to play "in the hole"/Italian-style trequartista, that's usually not going to be your 20 goal scorer either.

Jas10
Encouraging signs or sounds that we have plenty of money to spend but are only going to use it on genuine quality and upgrades… Emery will get the backing he deserves. We actually seem to have a proper and sensible transfer strategy rather than needlessly throwing money away…

I expect more. Given that our best signing of the last transfer market cost us £0 in transfer spend I am not sure that net spend is the best measure on which to base our transfer business. But then you already know that and have just suckered me into not ignoring you and, worse, responding. 2
