Philosopher
Things have been fairly quiet for a while now. No strong links, everything seems made up or a re- hashing of old links. Seems to me like we are working on something very secretive. Or just focusing on shedding the deadwood.
CarryOnVilla
For a genuine European push, we need a new CM, CB, CF, and few up back ups such as LB… but backups that will progress and be competing for their positions. but most importantly we need consistency from our existing players, particularly Phill and lil Emi

What we need is to play like a well drilled team with appropriate tactical approach each week. Obviously strengthening our line-up would bolster chances, but it would also amount pressure to get there this time around. Is time really so against us? Solid top half finish wouldn't be the end of the world in terms of us reaching European placing the next time around, no?

A new 8 hinges in Luiz being sold. While a new CF isn't as big of a priority if we keep Archer around and are using 1 CF in majority of the games. To me it doesn't feel like there is a CF we can sign which we would be happy with. I'm thinking maybe we sign Moise Kean on Loan with an option to buy or something? He won't want to take that up and try get mins ahead of Watkins/Ings. We also don't know if Bailey will adapt to play as part of a 2 up top with Watkins in the split striker roles. Realistically? For what? 10th place? Under any of our former regimes I say fine but these owners want more, to target Europe and bringing in Gerrard was to help us ‘try’ and achieve that. They aren’t trying for mid table mediocrity they want more and thus us the fans believe there is more. So just adding a cover LB isn’t ‘realistic’ it’s settling for midtable next season without a real try at Europe, whether we ultimately get it or not. This summer so far has been a great window with Coutinho, Kamara and Carlos but there is so much more business to do if we are to challenge for Europe.

I think (if we add the LB and keep Luiz) we've a better squad than any of West Ham, Newcastle, Leicester, Wolves. The Big 6 are spending a level we can't get near. If we add a new 8 to replace Luiz it's not really going to be a massive improvement to the overall squad.

I’d be content with top half this season. I do want to see Villa building a team for a future strike in to the top 4 . Top young players with bags of potential. So… More Boubs please

If Arsenal buy Raphinha and Jesus are they better than last season for example. They are buying Jesus who wants to play right wing and Raphinha whose is a right winger but they already have Saka there…I don’t understand them moves. So if Jesus plays upfront is he going to score more than Nkeitah or Lacazette did. Given we talked last season about Man City not playing with a striker yet Jesus was there playing. I don’t get what Arsenal are doing, these are quality players but they already have Saka so buying one making sense but two….so spending is great but spending wisely has to be questioned. Plus we have been one of the biggest spenders in recent years summer after summer so I’m not sure that rings true either. 11 minutes ago, CVByrne said: If we add a new 8 to replace Luiz it's not really going to be a massive improvement to the overall squad. I feel we are selling him and replacing him for a few different factors. I think Gerrard wants an experienced energetic, physical 8 added to the squad. It'll be a help but nothing massively significant I feel.

He's been linked with Liverpool, and if Arsenal don't get top 4 he'll be gone I reckon. He'd be an ideal replacement for Salah.

West Ham's form was worse than ours since Gerrard took over. With European football again they need to compete on more than one front with a smaller squad than us. Leicester are losing players and Vardy gets older. Newcastle had a bounce last season who knows how they will do next season integrating more new players. Wolves were beyond lucky last season with many of their wins. I think we've added very smartly to our squad too. Kamara and Carlos are the two key positions we needed filling. Press resistant ball players with high passing stats and a proper CDM. Add to Digne, Coutinho, Chambers, Olsen - all 4 are successful signings. We add a LB so we don't have a significant drop off when Digne is missing and we're in a good place. Consider Bailey like a new signing too. If we do a Luiz our and new 8 in hopefully that adds another bit to our overall squad performance. 1
