Are CDs Dead ?

I occasionally buy CDs but I rarely listen to them. I’ll create an mp3 of the album and put it on the relevant device(s).

I quite like having a physical copy of the music. I feel like I own it more and there’s something pleasing about having a collection to flick through. I still read through the sleeve notes, see if there’s anything of interest in the production notes or an interesting picture.

I’m not on Spotify or similar, for the reasons of the musicians not getting a fair cut. I’ve been tempted to, but have so far resisted. If I do, I think I would still buy a physical copy from the bands/artists I particularly like.

I still have my old vinyl collection, mostly for those old oddities that I haven't found available on CD or legal streaming services, or for when the only available CD release turns out to be "with added bonus tracks" or even worse: "re-mastered" and turns out to be hideously compressed in the process.

I kept 10% of my LP collection (about 200 albums) because I don't (yet) have them on CD, or they have high monetary or sentimental value.

I can't see what the problem is with bonus tracks - that's one of the main attractions of CD reissues to me. They're always at the end anyway, so they don't prevent you from listening to just the original album - just stop before the bonus tracks. As for remastering, I can never hear any difference, partly because I'm pretty cloth-eared anyway, partly because I've never cared about hi-fi - I just hear the songs, not the 'sound'. And, given that I play CDs in the car a lot, the compression is probably helpful over engine noise (I particularly wish my classical CDs had more compression and less dynamic range, as I'm forever having to turn the volume up and down in the car).

Physical media will probably almost die with the generation pre the millennium-switch. I've never fell into the vinyl-collecting rabbit hole but I've got plenty of CDs on display. Bought one the other day infact

It was a bit of an eye-opener last week when my mother in law wanted a new "micro-stereo" with FM-radio and CD. They just wont do a newish streaming-device. There where a few in store but my god were they utter China crap with Philips/JVC/Sharp badges. And till cost about 200 quid. Bought a second hand Denon instead for £50 and it sounds fantastic for what it is.

So not only are the media being phased out, the players are as well when it comes to mainstream. Specialists still exist of course.

stopped buying CD’s for a while when I stopped having cars that had CD players.

Actually, I'm dreading buying another car, for that reason. Hope I'll be able to get a CD player retrofitted, as it's an absolutely essential requirement for me.

I’ve got a tiny usb stick with about 30 albums on it.

I was sceptical, but it’s far better.

I don’t have a CD player (or a DVD player for that matter). There’s no need to store a physical copy in the house anymore.

You don't get the booklets on Spotify. This beats a bare tracklist on a phone screen anyday:

Maybe for more obscure music, but for stuff I like - older rock, indie stuff, a whole range of 'popular' music, there is very little missing when I search Spotify

Garth Brooks, arguably the biggest country music artist of all time. He isn't on there.

Stream Spotify from your phone into your car. Thats what I do nowadays.

Years ago Spotify was missing the likes of Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Slade and The Beatles. Eventually they all joined the Spotify party.

I'm sure there are artists (like Brooks that you mention) that aren't on there, but they're not on my radar really.

CDs are sort of a middle ground for me. For my favourite bands, I'll buy vinyl. For bands that I'm just checking out or listen to very casually, I'll use Spotify. Everything else, I buy the CD.

Quite often I'll check something out on Spotify and if I like it I'll buy the CD.

Thirty??? I select my in-car entertainment from 3000 CDs. Or I could use Spotify. A stick with 30 albums, none of which might suit my mood on the day, is neither one thing nor the other.

That's what I use it for. If it's worth more than four or five plays, it's worth owning.

And it just occurred to me - I hate minimalism. I like stuff. And I like to have that stuff around me. I find it comforting. Not clutter - having it tidily organised is essential. I suppose it helps that we have a fairly big house.

Well yes, if you’re driving a transit van you could probably have 3000 CD’s in there, but they wouldn’t all be within reach whilst you were driving.

I was just trying to say I was resistant to losing the CD player from the car, but it worked out ok.

Of course not. But they're all available in the house, before I set off, and I can pick up the one(s) I want. The chances of them being among the thirty on a datastick are slim.
