However, if we go to sell the player then it makes a big difference as the profit on a free player would be substantially than the profit on a player we paid 20m for (assuming they were sold for the same price). More profit means more FFP scope to invest It makes no difference. For the purpose of FFP the £20m fee paid is amortised across the contract as if it was a free transfer with higher wages. If the player is fully amortised then he is out of contract and leaves on a free. If we extend his contract we extend the amortisation period. The only way to get around that is to let his contract expire and let the player become a free agent and then sign him again as a freebie.
