NoelVilla
Can't write him off yet. Emery just might get the best out of him. But I do think he is going to have to find his way back to from from being an impact sub.

Need to show same effort levels as Buendia when losing the ball and generally off the ball.

Followed his good mate Gerrard to an unfashionable club with the lure of playing every game only to see his form nose dive and his mate sacked within 3 months and an uncertain future under the new manager whose system does not seem to suit his style. I actually really like him as person and player so I hope he stays and fits into the new system but you have to say it is another calamitous move in his career so far. I sometimes think you have to make your own luck....wallowing in self pity, is not always a good move ( not saying he is by the way)...just making a general observation. I have never been convinced, by talent unsupported by application....for me its synthetic....and Phil has been drifting in and out of games, and when he's out, he's a passenger....this league, is unmercifully hard on passengers....there is no hiding places anymore. I like Phil, I can only wonder at times, the things he is capable of, and I am not expecting a team full of Phils, so UE may get something out of him. I have never seen Phil as ball winning tackle monster, who stalks the midfield like a pitbull......so I am clear in my mind he needs a platform of other players to play from, Phil almost needs a chaperone, if UE feels he can afford that, Phil might have a future with us. I don't see, moving forward a manager with a rigid system, I see a tactical man, who will rely on changing the dynamics to suit the moment or opposition.....with that in mind, Phil might have a part to play. Its always easy to be seduced, by the magic of a player, like Phil, and I am no exception.....but we must first get the the team galvanised, in to a balanced unit.....only time will tell, if UE has a plan for Phil.
AvonVillain
He's sort of in Ronaldo territory now, (nowhere near as good, of course) whereby the team is better off without him. It's going to take some brilliant form to force his way back. Which of course suits everyone.

If he stays until at least the summer and rediscovers his form then everybody is happy (as we’d get a better transfer fee).
Popular Post Stevo985 Posted October 26, 2022 VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted October 26, 2022 Everyone gets a clean slate for me. Gerrard sucked the life out of this club, and that includes the players. We've got plenty of players who have gone from good players, playing for their international teams and doing well for Villa; to shells of their former selves. Coutinho gets that too. My feeling is it just won't work out as well as we hoped, but until he's had his chance under Emery, we shouldn't be judging him

Coutinho didn't leave Barcelona to be back up for a player we bought from Norwich. Emi starts and Emi should be backed to the hilt now as our record signing and brilliant character and engine that he is. Coutinho should not have been signed. He's not here to "fight it out" He is here to be part of a successful squad in all fronts. Especially with 5 subs. I rather see Emery try and get a tune out of him then throwing him away for our next toy. No club will pay his wages either. And Gabby can frankly do one. He stole a living from Villa for about 5 years. And now making a career on it. Edited October 26, 2022 by The Fun Factory
Popular Post Thug
I see him prob twice a week picking my kids up from school. There’s no sense of entitlement, no Billy big bollocks attitude, and is a general nice guy. He smiles and says hello whenever someone else does. There’s no bling, he comes in an ordinary family car. I’m 100% sure that any short comings are not through bad attitude or lack of wanting to succeed. I’m sure that he wants to succeed here as much as we want him to. Sometimes things just don’t work the way you want them to. One thing for sure though, getting on his back will only see a deterioration in form. Which will only make matters worse for everyone.

All this about him not acknowledging the fans on Sunday - he usually does go more or less straight in - i think he may be quite shy and he gave little Emi such a congratulatory hug when he came on in his place. Who knows the perception of being Stevie Gs pet may have been a burden for him. Give him a clean slate now.

Hank Scorpio
Clean slate for every player including Coutinho. I have my doubts physically is he capable now. Technically? One of the best players I've ever seen. I hope the new staff can put him into a position to shine and show his qualities.
thunderball
Emery is supposed to specialise in getting a tune out of failing players, surely he can get something out of Coutihno? If he cant I guess he really is a lost hope.
StanBalaban
When he first came into the club, he was brilliant. However Gerrard, especially post-Beale, soon nullified the efficacy of the attacking players. Bailey is never going to be the sort of player that is effective playing narrow with his back to goal. Ramsey has regressed, Watkins is a shell of the goal scorer we saw under Deano, and the less said about McGinn the better. As @Stevo985 says, everyone gets a clean sheet for me. This isn't one of those occasions, like under Garde, where elements of the team were toxic - we've got a decent bunch of people in the squad. I think Coutinho was probably tasked with finding that 'magic' that Gerrard wanted, without being given any clues as to how he was going to receive the ball, have space made for him, or anything else that forms a cohesive gameplan. There's a lot of supposition here I know, but I'm confident that Emery will soon be able to tell if Phil has got something to offer this team.

DJBOB
If he stays, there will be space for him in certain games. Additionally, Buendia seems to pick up a lot of little niggles from battling headlong into every tackle so it would be useful to have Coutinho - who would probably do best in a disciplined #10 role to swap in if need be. nepal_villan
Think he might go the way of Ozil - just not suited for the Premier League. Certainly he can do the business in some matches/situations, but might not be worth it for both sides to keep him
