Ron knew that hard running takes you far, not a magical tactician either, but knew how to build a platform to play from...knew about square pegs and round holes...all the players fitted and it looked believeable. Respect for what they have done as a footballer is unquestioned and maybe a little in awe of the person but that is a very different talent to coaching/managing and quickly that initial impression or awe fades. The league doesn't lie Nick. We've been shit this season and largely for 2021 and Smith has paid the ultimate price. Wether it was down to him, Shakey, or the other coaching staff is another question. The argument isn't a foundation to hire Gerrard, but many have already doomed him to failure before he's in the door, whilst others already have him pissing off to Liverpool before he's in the door. That's the point really. We've not spent that kind of money to be losing 5 on the bounce and sit 16th. Not all our signings can be duds. If someone else has spent £50m less and realistically £100m less when adjusted for our record departures and is sitting 7th then he would seem to be doing a hell of a lot better than the guy we've let go. Most accept that our form in 2021 hasn't been good enough and with an heavy heart and a great deal of sadness and no lack of fondess for that brilliant man Smith, accept the sacking. The point is that form is fleeting and his win percentages across his entire tenure aren't particularly high. FWIW, I don't think it's useful evidence for a case for or against, at this point.
