I think for models like Brighton's, there's a window of time in which you can reap the rewards of football markets that others are sleeping on (Leicester did something similar with the French league), but after a while everyone else catches up and starts buying players from those countries also; the prices increase and there's not the same value anymore. Also, as you as a club improve you need to acquire a better quality of player to keep the momentum going (harder to introduce players to a team that's competing for/in Europe) and the talent pool gets smaller as the price and quality increases.
