I feel it might have been a plan, and more complicated than it seems. Hause said on MOTD that Mings was supposed to go into that area for the header, but he said to Hause last minute swap and do my role on this one. And it was a good job they did swap. I really do hope that MacPhee has realised just how good in the air Hause is though.

Popular Post gwi1890
Notice the way we defend throw ins has changed to we box them in and there’s a clear shape about us when doing so, no more switching off and dropping back
mjmooney Posted September 26, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted September 26, 2021 Must admit I was a bit 'meh' when we appointed a set piece coach, but it's starting to look like an inspired move.

I mean our two best corners today were just whipped into six yard box and one of our CBs made a run and got on the end of the cross. Konsa should've scored first half. Think at times set pieces just get overcomplicated. All that floated to far post nonsense under Lambert and short corners never seem to work for us. Nothing wrong with just whipping it into six yard box sometimes and see what happens. I think there's a certain nuance to it myself. For example the way Watkins positioned himself to restrict De Gea's movement but moved away long before Hause touched the ball. It looked deliberate. Football is simple in essence, but small margins make a huge difference. MacPhee's presence alone is proof of that.

I'm a massive advocate of belting the ball in with as much pace as possible. Defenders hate it! Great movement for the goal too. Agreed, but whipped in for maximum efficiency means as low as possible over the head of the first defender and so if they know you will whip it the tallest guy goes there and it hits the first man. So you have to mix it up a bit. It’s a funny little science. Kind of like when Lineker talks about how he would get deliberately caught offside once or twice to make it easier to beat the trap. Makes total sense we have someone who is now responsible for it.

Also sounds like he’s been reading ‘inverting the pyramid’, which I would recommend, but which is a bit of a slog at times. A section in that book looks at number of passes before a goal is scored. 1

The Fun Factory
But wait a minute Danny Murphy thought it was a bad move? I am confused. He is normally so right on many things.

Sack off defensive coaches and attacking coaches and physiotherapists too. The head coach should just do everything. Danny **** Murphy.

I was fine until about the mid 1990’s then my eyes started to cross. Really in depth though and meticulously researched. Reminded me of a dissertation, which is probably why it was a tricky read.
Vive_La_Villa
I reckon he has probably been working with Luiz too on perfecting his set pieces. He has been whipping them In superbly.

pas5898
Someone Saturday was saying the Bailey goal vs Everton (Throw in - Ings ball) was down to Macphee as well. They have an NFL style "play book" from certain situations tailored against the opposition, which I guess includes throw ins from the half way line as well!
VillaJ100
I still have PTSD about those terrible Westwood glided balls to the back post under Lambert. Did we ever score from one? EVER?
Stevo985 Posted September 27, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted September 27, 2021 I wonder if this guy is just REALLY good, or is our improvement just a result of us not putting enough attention on set pieces preciously? That's not me trying to take anything away from MacPhee, just genuinely curious
