I meant more in buying an older player for free as a back up. Young is fairly old but he seems in great shape.
The Fun Factory
Something doesn't smell right at Southampton. Have gone downhill fast and look like a relegation struggler now.

Did they get into some FFP difficulty or did Covid have an affect on some of these prem clubs also??? I think you are right that something doesn't smell right or are the Owners being just tight kids...

MWARLEY2
I think we will find that quite a few premier league teams will settle for surviving in the league. There is absolutely no chance for 10 teams in the league to compete at the top table . Even Everton with all of Moshinis money have hit their glass ceiling due to FFP. ) i just hope that NWSE are thinking in 10 year plans rather than 5 years . maqroll
The league needs a salary cap that is enforced. So many clubs just make up the numbers now, and we are one of them. We have a glimmer of hope that we might break into the top group, but unless clubs like Newcastle get bought by nation states, they have no hope of doing anything other than maybe getting relegated.
Delphinho123
I honestly can't see how they would turn down a bid in the region of 40m for JWP. If they need the money, surely that will tempt them? I also think a lot will come down to the player. If he wants to leave, then he will make it difficult for Southampton. I don't know where I stand on JWP. In one sense, he's the perfect player as he gives us specialist set piece quality, leadership and knows the league/wont take time to settle. On the other hand, I'm sure you could find a better player for 15m less on the continent. Taking money out of the equation, he improves us but we still need to replace Grealish so taking money out of the equation isn't an option!

We just make up the numbers? We beat the then-champions 7-2, beat Arsenal twice, beat Spurs and UCL winners Chelsea at the end of the season. We do not just make up the numbers. 2

A great season for VIlla, no doubt, considering our last 12 years or so. But I'm talking in terms of repeatedly qualifying for the CL and winning the league itself. We finally have hope that we might be able to crack the code, but we aren't there yet.

I'd agree with this if FFP ensured that there'd be a level playing field, but we'd end up like Italy and Germany with the biggest clubs dominant. There's be no Leicester's winning the FA cup or West Ham's pushing for 4th. My choice would be to let owners spend what they like so long as the debt is not leveraged against the club. The debt should sit with the owners.

I agree with you - We're not going to qualify for the Champions League or win the League unless 4/5 world class youngsters come through together and take us there. Best we can hope for is the odd flirtation with top 6 and a Cup win. #reality.

There is something mystical about our great club and I think we will do it as I suspect ffp will be a different beast in the coming years

Struggling in lower mid-table is pretty much best case for Southampton, which isn’t a great showcase for his ability. Big nose will still be down VP next year watching Ty, Ollie, Matty T, Ezri, and even without ‘that man’ we’ll still be a competitive side, even more so if Prowse joins. Villa’s his best option unless L’plop come in - then we’re goosed. Much as I rate Rice and Philips, England would’ve been better with one of them + JWP, imo. He needs to make that clear this season, and outside top 4 and Leicester we’re going to be the best route to some level of European competition at club level. Career wise Villa makes sense for him (granted my take isn’t completely impartial).

He's at the age where a lot of players are looking for that big career-defining transfer if their current club is struggling to progress. He either goes down the Adam Lallana route of being a squad player at a Champions League side, or the Danny Ings route of being a starter at an improving mid-table side. Either way, he'll probably get into the England squad.

Awol
@KentVillan FWIW at Liverpool I’d see JWP as the long term replacement for Henderson.
