Bailey’s dead ball stats are very very good. But do they take free kicks from the same side of the pitch? I thought (but could well be wrong!) Bailey was left footed and JWP right footed? If so then the one thing better than a good free kick taker, is a good free kick taker on the right side of the penalty box and an equally good free kick taker on the left side of the penalty box. It also means that it will be a bitch for keepers to set up a wall for more central free kicks because you need to prepare for the ball curling either way depending on who actually hits it. thunderball
JWP is a leader, seemingly a consumate pro and hasn't missed a game in two years. He is the best dead ball deliverer in the division and an England player (just). From what I 've recently seen he is quite versatile and does have a habit of goal involvements from open play despite @Laughable Chimp stats suggesting otherwise? JWP is 26 and Dougie is 23. What if we sold Dougie for £25 and bought JWP for £40m, are we getting good value on that £15m? I was underwhelmed by Dougie last season (and McGinn actually), and we do need a greater contribution from that area. Its all about the imporved percentages now, the diminishing returns as you move up the table is story of the sharp end of the game.

I think JWP does do a bit of ratting, which is what I want to see.....Luiz just shadows an opponent, until the player just ends up in our box, then its anyones man....our defender usually wins the ball back and gives it to Luiz, rinse & repeat.....its not good enough. We have a formidable front line......we need a player/s to win the ball midfield, (not deep) and feed the beasts....otherwise, we have a great frontline with no service. I said quite a lot last season that I think Doug and McGinn were having to try and do the job of a 3 man midfield once Barkley gave up and we didn't have Jack either. If we add Ward-Prowse I think you'll see Doug and McGinn return to their best (with Marv covering the start of the season for Doug) and we also have Sanson plus the youngsters. JWP would be a great signing, I'd probably go up to £40m to get it done, maybe more with add-ons for stuff like England appearances or we get European football.

rodders0223
It's the Coutinho situation. You've sold a top player, everyone knows you have money and you're going after someone tied into a long term deal and is the jewel in the crown of his team You will have to pay through the nose for this transfer to come off. Do we want to do that for James Ward Prowse? I mean, I like him. He's decent on the ball his free kicks are the best in Europe in my opinion. He has a lovely strike on him. - but honestly I think his passing in open play is just above average, he's very lightweight and not athletically blessed. He is what he is at the stage of his career. I don't see him going another level. I don't think it makes sense on any level to break the bank for this guy. I'd like to see him in a Villa shirt but it makes no sense. He would definitely be an upgrade on what we have - but it would take 50m- 60m I would presume. Is he a £60m step up on what we have? Not for me. He's a decent improvement. useless
Southampton squad is so poor that I actually think they'd be better off selling Ward Prowse and using the money to sign a number of players to improve their team overall... Like man, if you imagine a scenario where Ward Prowse wasn't already a Southampton player and they had £40m to spend would they be wise to spend it on him or buy four five new players, I think the latter, he's not really the type of player you'd buy as a struggling team to be the difference between staying up or going down, but more someone that might help an already decent team.

I think he’s a good player, has so much more to his game than just free kicks, but is a he a huge improvement on Luiz, Mcginn or Sanson? Not against signing him at the right price but would prefer someone who’s better than the midfielders we have rather than similar

Condimentalist
I think he'd potentially be gettable for £35m or so, and would be a good investment at that price. Obviously 50-60 would be ridiculous. If Bailey is a good set piece taker as had been suggested there may be better value targets - Locatelli springs to mind - but would love someone who will really add solidity to the midfield and allow the front 4 to really express themselves. Liverpool did it for Van Dijk, ironically from the same club and many people would have said the same as you're saying about JWP about it. It's not like he was pulling up at Saints, and then suddenly he's in the conversation for Balon D'or within a year.
