OutByEaster? Posted April 19, 2021 Moderator Share Posted April 19, 2021 Agnelli's principle is that even if the teams eleventh and twelfth in the Super League are playing each other in a late season fixture that means nothing, if one of those teams has Ibrahimovich and the other has Haaland, the fans of those players and interested neutrals that love celebrity and a big occasion will mean that the game will still generate more income and more interest than say a crucial Arsenal vs. Aston Villa game at the end of the season with Villa's relegation on the line and Arsenal trying to qualify for Europe. The majority of the 4 billion viewers he's interested in aren't at all bothered about Villa's relegation, many of them won't be too bothered about the individual teams in the competition - it'll be like me and you watching El Classico because Messi is in it. He's saying that financially, that type of football fan generates more income than the bloke that picks up two mates at four a.m. in Southampton and drives away to Sunderland for a third round league cup tie.

Spurs arsenal and inter will be the small fry of this competition If they are getting same money as everybody else then I think they could attract players with the best club stadium in London and the location

Davkaus
It may have been discussed already, but this puts Project Big Picture in context doesn't it? I wonder if this was in the works and PBP was a way to ensure the PL couldn't sanction them for it.
PieFacE Posted April 19, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted April 19, 2021 The idea of watching these "elite" teams play each other every week with absolutely nothing on the line is sending me to sleep before they've even kicked a ball. It's pretty much watching a season long friendly competition which means absolutely nothing come the end of it.

AndyM3000
We still have to play 4 of these lot. Kick them out now and give us 12 points, thanks.
Sulberto21
@OutByEaster? I think they are talking about spurs finishing bottom of the super League. Only a few teams will be getting the full revenue of £350m the rest will be getting around £112m and the 5 that 'qualify' a pittance.

It's Your Round
All I can think of now is that old Budweiser advert where the Americans take over football and change the rules. They merge the Manchester clubs, move Arsenal to the Peak District and get rid of boring nil nils with “added time multiball”. Soccertainment baby! Spurs have a huge global fan base - but not compared to Real/Barca/United. The original point was from me that some people were saying that this league would have set, equal budgets. My post was that Man United would not allow that precisely because they want to leverage their huge global following and no way would want a level playing field with eg Spurs. And if they did they would soon change things if they saw because of their poor expensive signings spurs had invested their equal share more wisely and were beating them all the time. I just don't see this will ever be a level playing field with fixed budgets. Edited April 19, 2021 by sidcow

On that twitter thread the differences between the twelve founders were much less pronounced than that - with only a (relatively) small difference between them - obviously the "guests" would be getting a lot less - but I'd read that the difference between Real and Spurs was very small - much nearer to the twelve founders all getting £300-350m and the "guest" teams getting a third of that. KenjiOgiwara
No chance they aren’t kicked out of the PL. If they remain, the rest of English football teams have to start their own league. No point participating in a fixed race.
ciggiesnbeer
Slept on it. As long as the six leave the premier league I am fine with it. Hope they have fun and do well. As long as they dont participate in the premier league anymore its fine. Chance for new blood to win some legit trophies. The six can enjoy their harlem globetrotter trophies.
