4th (or better...) will be so so tough again. But the size and quality of the squad we suddenly have is extraordinary.

I think it's important fans remember we can be seriously good this season and still finish 7th.

Yep. As much as you could say the same for Villa, all of Spurs, Newcastle, Chelsea and United had heaps of injuries themselves last season and to varying degrees have strong squads on paper. Won't be easy to replicate the achievement of last season nor would it be a failure if we didn't manage it, can only imagine it's going to be a tough, competitive season. Hard to say this early but if we could just solidify European football again for the third season in a row it'd be good going.

I think for us as fans this would be acceptable, but I reckon the coaching staff and boardroom have ambitions to get champions league regularly. Some of our growth might depend on it. I think there is A LOT of pressure to succeed now.

Really interested to see how Unai evolves the team tactically this year. Will we see more 352 with Illing Jr and JPB as wingbacks? How will the double pivot evolve now we have a physical dominator like Onana? Will Maatsen be utilised as an inverted full back? Will we maintain the slow, low intensity style or will a more intense press be incorporated. Fascinating

He'll do it game by game, situation by situation. This squad is so versatile, he'll be confusing opponents on the fly!

As soon as the ball hits the CDMs/CMs, we better have some **** runners man.  We're loaded with people who can play good forward passes through lines now, as well as being loaded with people who can run in forward areas.

I think the only play style well struggle against is the low block teams, but we'll see.

I can see us beating quite a few of our "league rivals" this year, because of the style we play.

Excited!

7th would be a big disappointment IMO. Not really because of the okay but because of the financial aspect to keep progressing we desperately need CL or Europa League football. Conference league finances just don't cut it.

We have the 8th biggest budget don't we?

4th is a big overachievement.

Other sides want that CL money as well.

To catch up to others/stay ahead we have to overachieve relative to budget until our budget is big enough.

I can see this starting 11 against West Ham (unless some injuries happen or we sign someone significantly  better).

Martinez

Cash, Konsa, Torres, Maatsen

Bailey, Onana, Tielemans, Rodgers

Mcginn, Watkins

Happy with this starting 11? Who would you replace? (I'm assuming here Mings, Buendia and Ramsey are not 100% fit to start the game after hardly playing a game in last 12 months).

Still playing very similar to how we finished last year. I’m sure he’ll have some minor tweaks match to match but wouldn’t expect to see too much variation.

But perhaps a more expanded number of personnel options will allow Unai some more adventurous tactics this year.

With Onana and Jaden pretty much on board I think we have some real options. I’m assume Diaby is gone! And one of Moreno or Digne will go.

I think this is the best team we have for West Ham:

Emi

Konsa Carlos Pau Maatsen

Onana

Bailey McGinn Tielemans Rodgers

Ollie

That gives us a sub bench of Gauci, Kosta, Moreno, Mings, Barkley, Enzo, Jaden, JJ and Duran (or a replacement striker)

That would mean Buendia, Iling Jr, Cash, Archer, Dobbin don’t even make the bench.

Or Barkley next to Onana, with McGinn on the bench  in a 4 2 3 1

does look a strong bench

When the dust has settled and the transfers complete…..I think we will have threats of one nature or another, all over the park….I think we will be a more threatening team.

We will be a stronger unit, we just then have to gel, which will improve incrementally.

I envisage more energy and intensity, from a young and more athletic squad.

Nice attempt, but there is a lot wrong with this.

  • Ramsey plays on the left or centre-left, whereas you have him on the right.
  • Likewise, SJM is more likely to play right or centre-right.
  • JPB, whilst versatile, will likely spell Bailey on the WR, rather than join the left rotation with; Ramsey, Rogers, Iling-Jr.
  • We are unlikely to need Cash to play high up on the right, due to the strength already in that area. Naturally, he may (as might Kosta) progress into those areas, but he's not starting as a RM/RW.
  • The same goes for Maatsen. Quite possible however, that both he and Cash/Kosta, play WB in a back 5, but that will be situational e.g. away to a team with a good home record and playing on the counter.
  • Kamara isn't a bench player. He'll start when fit, even if alongside Onana.

Imho, the most likely formation when all players are fit, will be 4-3-2-1

------------------------- Ollie -----------------------

------------------ Rogers ------------- Bailey -

------------------------ Tielemans --------------

--------------- Kamara - Onana --------------

Maatsen - Pau - Konsa - Nedeljković

------------------- Martinez----------------------

Also, I do not mean to be a pedant, but it's quite easy to check the spellings of player names; Rogers, Maatsen, Tielemans, Digne, Kosta (Nedeljković).

  • Thanks 1

Don't think he is dropping mcginn, unless his form drops of. Mcginn was clearly preferred over Tielemans last season.

Also having Nedeljkovic (unproven 18 year old) in starting 11 over Cash or Konsa is a bit of a stretch.
