Was the knotweed referenced? Also, do you guys not have Roundup? Drench the ground with that after it flowers, you won't have anymore knotweed. Of course it can cause a litany of cancers, but when your fanbase already has a family tree that resembles a pool cue, a little thing like cancer is small potatoes to several missing chromosomes.
