Odd. Villa and the England national have nothing to really do with each other and if anything, the national team has not been a positive factor for the club due to either unfairly ignoring our stars or leading to them getting tapped up. 2

Just find it strange how people support a club team from a country that they actively dislike their national team. Anyway, not important or relevant to Ollie Watkins! However the manager and the way he has this team playing football is an affront to the sport I love. Can't support them in good conscience.

I was reading the comments on here and talking to mates when the game was on but as soon as Watkins entered the pitch I was glued to the screen. Was the same when Platt scored in 1990 just makes it instantly more watchable and more like club football when you have a vested interest.
supermon
I dont think I've rewatched a villa goal as much as I've rewatched this Ollie goal for England.

I’m not the biggest England fan at all, but I don’t think I’d ever actively want them to lose—I’m just quite indifferent.

Crazy how Grealish the Villa player playing for England was so much more enjoyable and the pride I felt compared to Grealish the City player playing for England = Meh

Well yes wanting us to lose is a bit too far! Each to their own though I guess.

Odd. Personal experience comes into it too. I grew up a Villa fan, dad was a Villa fan. We have loads of family in the Birmingham area who are all Villains. There's a sizeable Irish connection to Villa and when I was a kid Houghton, McGrath and Staunton were Gods who played for Villa. At 14 years of age I was hit with a chair and spat on at Landsdowne road. Growing up I was often verbally abused by soldiers on the street, despite all the good experiences I had from living in England (Which vastly outweigh the bad interactions, I might add) it's hard to shake this. Being from Northern Ireland there is a close proximity to English media so every tournament there is hype around the team and "It's coming home"ness of it all which just has a feeling of arrogance, regardless of whether it is tongue in cheek or not. As a young adult I lived in England for several years, made some amazing friends and as with most parts of the world, the vast majority of people are just normal folk and sound. I was delighted to see Ollie score, cracking goal. I've never had anything against English players and always hope they do well, they're professionals and deserve success regardless of the behaviour of their fans and media. I don't know about other people but there are elements of the fanbase and media that just makes me lukewarm towards the English national team. Delighted for the players if they're successful, but beyond that meh. A club is much more than that. A club represents a locality, a diverse group of players, cultures, idealologies. It just so happens that Villa is an English team that people love. Not sure if my rambling train of though sheds light on it but for people who aren't from England, chances are they have had bad experiences with the national fanbase, directly or indirectly. This ultimately colours their dislike of the national team. 4
