Speaking of free time: Norwegian govt has decided teachers who are defined as close contacts, say if a pupil tests positive, can still go to work but have to quarantine in their spare time. One important caveat is that you’re exempted from quarantine if you’ve had your booster. But still, that is a shocking policy. Absolutely disgraceful.

Genie
BBC Quote Daily reported coronavirus cases in the UK jumped to a record 183,037 on Wednesday. The latest daily figure includes five days of data from Northern Ireland, as reporting was delayed over Christmas. In the past seven days, 914,723 people have tested positive for Covid. And a total of 10,462 people were in hospital with Covid in England as of Wednesday morning, figures from NHS England show. This is up 48% from a week ago and is the highest number of admissions since 1 March. Not all the patients in hospital will have been admitted for Covid - latest data suggests about three in 10 have the virus but were admitted to hospital for something else. NoelVilla
You should do like Sweden and don't bother testing. No pandemic if no positive tests. We are run by clowns as well.

fruitvilla
A reasonable proxy for COVID cases is the rate of hospitalization these days. As the potencies of the various strains wax and wane and immunization takes hold. Attached is a link to some world data for Canada US and the UK. Not too, too bad at the moment.Number of COVID-19 patients in hospital per million (ourworldindata.org) We can select from several countries ... and even Sweden is not bad per se, but could be better compared to Denmark and Norway,

Possibly a lot more acquired immunity in Sweden than the more locked down neighbouring countries?

mjmooney Posted December 29, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted December 29, 2021 (edited) The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures (BBC4) are aimed at high school level science students, but always interesting. This year, unsurprisingly, the presenter is Jonathan Van-Tam, talking about epidemiology. Worth watching. They're always interesting but as topical as heck this year.
