My whole response was trying to express that my individual view of strong leadership and good leadership are that they are basically the same thing and the likes of Merkel demonstrate this in her response to the virus. We often seem to talk at cross purposes. Sorry. Okay. It didn't seem that way but I must have read it wrongly. I think what we both posted indicated a good deal of common ground on what we regard as good leadership. Yep, we probably do. Sorry here, also.

chrisp65
I think it was maybe @Stevo985 that asked if they’d found anyone fined for similar circumstances to Cummings... Free the Maitlis One Quote In one case, a man in Leicestershire was issued with an FPN after being stopped on the motorway. He told officers he was "travelling home to London after visiting a sick relative" in Nottinghamshire. There is no appeal process fairly confident there will be more once we’ve had a couple of days for people to come forward with their anecdotes

I agree it's close and makes the point anyway. But I want someone who was fined for specifically driving to provide or seek childcare. I want it. I want it now.

Sadly can’t spot anything yet, as all the talk is of review and Cummings rather than historical cases. Don’t worry though, they will come forward, they always do
HanoiVillan
England's coronavirus tracing plan 'beset by conflict and confusion' 'It was meant to be the system that would allow the country to emerge confidently from lockdown. But the development of the NHS tracing system has been characterised by missteps, conflict and frustration behind the scenes. [...] Tensions came to the fore after it became clear that a mobile phone app trumpeted by the health secretary, Matt Hancock, as being ready to launch nationally “mid May” was beset with technical difficulties. There is now no set date for its launch. That switched attention to what was intended to be a supplementary system of national call centres, where 25,000 people, including more than 6,000 clinicians, had been hastily recruited to interview people testing positive for coronavirus and ask who they had been in contact with. Public health experts believed they had the expertise that people who had been trained with the help of a script did not have. But they claim that for weeks during March and April they were sidelined and only became actively involved in May after “a massive campaign behind the scenes” to get them on board. Working within local councils, contact tracers have been employed for decades, tackling infections such as tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases. It is an interview-based process that requires experience and tact to obtain sometimes sensitive information from sick individuals, and employs dozens of people in large councils scattered across environmental and sexual health teams, although the services have been hit hard by spending cuts. Meanwhile, some of those hired for the national contact tracing centres have had relatively cursory training. One told the Guardian that the guidance on doing the job simply consisted of watching videos and reading scripts. “I have not been given any details of who to call if I have problems. Only an email address has been provided which largely goes unanswered.” Others warned that they had little experience of using computer systems intended to help them talk through cases. Another worker talked of being “thrown in the deep end”. He added: “The online system is really complicated and I want just a couple of days once it goes live to navigate it.” Last week, Rupert Soames, chief executive of Serco and brother of the former Conservative MP Sir Nicholas Soames, posted a video message saying the recruitment process was “an unprecedented achievement”. But he also conceded there had been problems with the training process. “Inevitably, I am afraid, we will have made some mistakes along the way and if it has all felt a bit clunky and rushed, I apologise.”' moron link: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/27/englands-coronavirus-tracing-plan-beset-by-conflict-and-confusion So essentially, the reasons we don't have a track and trace infrastructure in place yet are 1) the launch of the app set for 'mid May' has been a disaster and indefinitely shelved, 2) public health professionals doing this job already have been cut to the bone by Tory cuts, 3) the Tories decided to go with an army of not-much-more-than-minimum-wage call center workers hired by Serco instead, 4) when it became clear that the app wouldn't be a quick workaround and that they needed some actual professionals, they've now gone back to them. They don't know what they're doing. Spoiler A reminder, for anyone who needs it, that the head of NHS track and trace, Dido Harding, was the incompetent former head of Talk Talk when they suffered one of the largest data breaches in UK history because they didn't have a secure website. She is also married to John Penrose, Tory MP for Weston-super-Mare. The hospital in Weston-super-Mare had to stop admitting any patients the other day because they were so overwhelmed with coronavirus cases, more than two months after the lockdown began. Straggler
Test and trace how it works Quote What will I have to do now? As is currently the case, anyone who develops symptoms of coronavirus - a persistent cough, fever or a sudden loss of taste or sense of smell - will have to isolate for seven days and the rest of their household for 14 days. The difference is that from Thursday, everyone with symptoms should ask for a test online or call to arrange a test by calling 119. If the test comes back negative, everyone in your household can go back to normal. But if the test comes back positive, the NHS Test and Trace team will get in touch - via text, email or phone call - to discuss whom you have come into close contact with. Flawless fig leaf. Straggler
One part I really don't understand is that there are a bunch of countries that have a working app. Can't we just get a copy and roll it out here? Reinventing the wheel here seems pointless and is clearly not working. I know the obvious answer is the govt wanted to shovel some money to a mate to do the work, but it is not a good answer. He’s been in hospital for four weeks after suffering a stroke at home. 72 years of age. Caught Covid19 whilst in hospital and was having good days and bad days. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions for all the family. Nobody has even been allowed to see him at all. Now just heard that my Auntie, Niece and Nephew have been called to the hospital to see him as there is nothing more they can do! Truly, truly gutted, as i like him a lot and hope the hospital are wrong. We have a lot of football banter when we see each other and he’s a big baggies supporter. Now I’m just flat as a pancake with the news. It’s a cruel world we live in sometimes. Boing Boing Uncle Pete and please just keep fighting. Unfortunately my Uncle passed away earlier today. I think helping mates out with contracts is a lot of the answer (see my question above as well, about 'why are Serco being contracted to hire people on not much more than minimum wage to be contact tracers, when contact tracers in local authorities were not being used?'), and I also think there's just quite a lot of arrogance and British exceptionalism involved as well (why did we want Dyson to invent a new ventilator, instead of ordering more from companies that already made them?).
