And yet all of these things have died an unholy death, and we're absolutely humiliating ourselves with all this faux grief oneupmanship. Why can't we just do simple stuff like one minute of silence before kick off, a nice state funeral, an extra bank holiday, flags at half mast. Instead we've got **** Ann Summers and Poundland paying tribute, digital billboards everywhere, weirdos crying in front of Buckingham Palace, everyone just scrambling over each other to be the best at being sad. It's completely insane. (Yes, I am mainly just annoyed about the football being cancelled.) It's a shared psychosis. Insane is the correct word.

The biggest privilege we all have is the freedoms of choice. We have decided the career paths we have chosen, the choices we make, and we are all free to change those paths if we so wish. The Queen didn’t have that choice. As soon as her uncle Edward VIII abducated her life was decided. Of course she’s never had to worry about things like the cost of living, but her life came with its own costs and sacrifices. I only spent 4yrs in the Army, but every single Soldier I met would have laid down their lives for this special leader, and sadly, many did. Special, wonderful women. RIP ma’am. It was a pleasure to serve you Boss. She could have walked away from it, not being Queen. As you say, her uncle chose to leave the throne. That being said, if she had done, she still wouldn’t have lead what most would describe as a “normal” life. Her grandson has tried walking away from royal life and it’s fair to say he and his family won’t ever have a normal life. Maybe she felt she couldn’t abdicate, there was an enormous weight of expectation that she should reign. No idea. I can believe that. I can also believe that she wouldn’t have grasped what the next 70 years might be like during her reign. But she DID have the freedom to make that choice. Working into her 90’s. She chose that. I’m all for members of the royal family living a more normal life, being out of the limelight, their safety maintained, doing some of the typical things we might take for granted. I’m fully on board for that. But the best way for that to happen, is to not have a royal family in the first place, or at the very least one that isn’t as high profile and celebrated like the current regime is. 4
Davkaus
I also think it's only fair to highlight that while there were aspects of her life she was born into and couldn't couldn't choose to avoid, like living much of her life in public view, that did come with the aspects of her life she was born into that none of the rest of us *could* chose, like unbelievable wealth, privilege, and literally being above the law. On balance, she'll probably have felt that being in the public eye was a worthwhile trade for her many palaces.
