On verge of joining newcastle for 12m apparently

If its 12m thats a rubbish deal we should be looking closer to 18m esp if its Newcastle

If thats true its a shocking deal. Purslow has **** this one up

Brighton got 12 million for Dan Burn 🙄

Wish him the best. Solid signing, did a good job. Looked a bit lost when Jack left and didn't seem to want competition for his place. Tis for the best he's moved on for all parties.

The competition part is not true though. I dont know why people keep saying this

Buying a player in a specialised position for 25 million and making him the highest paid player at the club kills any competition in that spot. Digne might be the better player but still if played poor would never get dropped.

Targett never had a chance of winning that job and wanted to play, similar to Guilbert when we signed Cash for 15 million

So is your recommendation that we should be signing players of lesser quality that are nearer the level we currently have?

~£15m would suggest two things.

We overpaid for him when we came up.

We are desperate to get rid of players. It's not a good deal for us.

we 100% overpaid for him. he wasn't even first choice at southampton

15m is about fair i'd say but i'd hope for some performance related add ons

Think they paid a £5M loan fee. But we have sold cheap, especially given his performances for them.

No should always try improve but dont be calling people bottlers because they are in a competition they have no chance of winning. By paying so much in a specilised position dont complain when the squad is unbalanced

If we signed Donnarumma or Alisson tomorrow for 80 million and paid double what Emi is getting. Would people complain and call him a bottler if he wanted to leave? Would be same scenario

We were the ones that overpaid for him, if the loan fee was £5m then I suppose we break even, Matt Targett was never going to be the type of player to increase in value.

As we bought him in 2017, the accounting rules will mean that virtually the full amount of the 12m will be profit as we have already paid the majority of the 12m, plus we save 3m a year on wages. As you say, there will have been a loan fee too. That's not a bad return on a player that has reached his level and is never going to set the world alight. We got lucky that Toon were in a mess and took him on loan and he got some game time.

I haven't called anyone a bottler. But your argument appears to be reverting to saying we shouldn't be buying players of such good quality again

Gareth Barry without the composure or mental strength. Anything over 10 million is great for me..Burned his bridges. Not the kind of player Gerrard wants. Replaced him with a 41 cap French International. If we get our money back then even better.

I didn't say you did but a lot on the thread are calling him that for 6 months

We should sign quality but unless we get into Europe we wont be able to attract fair competition for places and players in specialist positions wont want to sit on the bench weekly unless mercenaries

Good riddance Matt. Shame you had the drive of a wet wipe when competition arrived. Attitude stinks. Glad we will be rid.

Embarrassing

£12m + £5m loan fee is a sensible deal. It's not awful by any stretch.

We spent £25m on Digne, who we think is an obvious upgrade. We were never getting more than that for the player we effectively tossed aside.

The absolute most we could realistically ask Newcastle for was £25m as a result. Then throw in we're going to be keen to get our business done quickly and it makes sense.

£17m total isn't too bad. It's not great but it's not awful. If that can be wrapped up soon we could see our new LB join before the end of next week

I agree but in fairness to the recruitment team at the time we needed to attract players to Villa and we were not an attractive proposition at the time. No chance of winning anything and high potential of relegation. In order to convince people to join us we needed to overpay in wages and transfer fees. It worked (just about) as we are now established as a PL team. If we can recoup transfer money like this with Targett that is a great result

Yes I agree - he jumped at the first hint of competition. What kind of attitude is that?

Again was not a competition one day you will understand that

Wet wipe. Are you 6 years old. Grow up, most of your comments on a harmless Matt Targett have been appalling the last 6 months
