He is utterly gutless and Newcastle will find that out very quickly when this current purple patch ends. Which it will. He missed 13 games in the last 5 seasons. 6 seasons ago he missed 38 games as he was out injured for the entire season with a Hamstring injury. Tempted to go back through the thread or matches where he couldn’t cross nor defend. He was massively low on confidence and form. A few decent performances and people are acting like he’s better than Digne. Nobody could have anticipated either outcome. He had a poor start, something I've been largely critical of him myself but by the time Gerrard had taken over, he was playing fine. Certainly, when we were flying high under Gerrard's new manager bounce the idea that Targett was the one that needed replacing first would've been laughed off. Then we got linked Digne and suddenly Targett was always shit and had been terrible the entire season. I don't even think he's been that good for Newcastle in, it's just their options at left back were terrible prior to Targett coming in and Targett seems amazing in comparison. He's always been that. useless Posted April 19, 2022 Share Posted April 19, 2022 Loaning Targett out is great business and future planning, when we signed Digne it was obvious that there would be a very good chance that Targett's time with us would be coming to an end, as we weren't going to have two left-backs in their mid to late twenties fighting for one spot, will be one or the other with a younger player brought in as back-up. So loaning out Targett and allowing him to play means he will keep his value and we can get some money for him in the summer and use it to buy a younger replacement, which is the ideal scenario. If we were in any serious peril of relegation, or had any realistic chance of qualifying for Europe we might have kept him just in case, because without Digne in that scenario we'd need a specialist to come in and replace him, but as it is we pretty much had nothing to play for other than midtable so if Digne was to get injured it wouldn't cost us dearly as there's not much at stake, in our situation the positives of Targett playing for Newcastle and keeping his value outweigh the negatives of him not being with us in our current situation. Since the new owners came in Kodjia, Samatta, Engels, and Grealish are the players we've recieved a fee for, two of those hardly played and we got less back than we paid for them. I think you are right....but they are effective and its no good crying when they are effective and are instrumental in gathering points. you could say about, Dawson at West Ham, would we have signed him?, not likely, but he does a job to decent effect....some of these players who seem average joes....play a huge part in the complete team. That's a part of our problem, we keep signing footballers, when we need some effective players....sure they need some skill, but we miss the bits they do well, sometimes the ugly bits.
