Matt Targett

Targett has always been fine when things were going well, as they have been during his time at Newcastle but he is the first to hide in the corner at the very first sign of trouble. He is utterly gutless and Newcastle will find that out very quickly when this current purple patch ends. Which it will. Hopefully he will be their problem when this happens.

It was a mistake by the club to let Matt go out on loan as it left us short if Digne got injured. Which he has.

Not going to blame any individuals, just going to hope that the club think fully about transfers in the future and don't make this same mistake again.

I agree it would have been better to keep Targett. I assume there were discussions we are unaware of relating to finance and player's wishes which we are unaware of.

Let's hope his injury free purple patch lasts to the end of the season and into the summer transfer window

He has missed 10 games through injury in 6 seasons

It is 51 games missed in the last 6 seasons. He missed 13 games in the last 5 seasons. 6 seasons ago he missed 38 games as he was out injured for the entire season with a Hamstring injury.

Tempted to go back through the thread or matches where he couldn’t cross nor defend. He was massively low on confidence and form. A few decent performances and people are acting like he’s better than Digne. Nobody could have anticipated either outcome. We had to upgrade the left back.

Each transfer window there have been calls for an upgrade at left back

Exactly - it just feels like any bad piece of luck or whatever is a stick to beat the management. Digne is quality just had bad luck with injuries. Targett isn’t going to be here in the summer and it’s best for all parties.

Loaning Targett out is great business and future planning, when we signed Digne it was obvious that there would be a very good chance that Targett's time with us would be coming to an end, as we weren't going to have two left-backs in their mid to late twenties fighting for one spot, will be one or the other with a younger player brought in as back-up.

So loaning out Targett and allowing him to play means he will keep his value and we can get some money for him in the summer and use it to buy a younger replacement, which is the ideal scenario.

If we were in any serious peril of relegation, or had any realistic chance of qualifying for Europe we might have kept him just in case, because without Digne in that scenario we'd need a specialist to come in and replace him, but as it is we pretty much had nothing to play for other than midtable so if Digne was to get injured it wouldn't cost us dearly as there's not much at stake, in our situation the positives of Targett playing for Newcastle and keeping his value outweigh the negatives of him not being with us in our current situation.

Since the new owners came in Kodjia, Samatta, Engels, and Grealish are the players we've recieved a fee for, two of those hardly played and we got less back than we paid for them. So we need to get better at selling players.

Yep it's great business to have a 37 year old winger playing at LB for a dozen games especially when every PL placing is worth over £1m in prize money.

Gerrard wanted to leave Liverpool. Rooney wanted to leave Utd. Kane wanted to leave Tottenham. Grealish wanted to leave Villa (round 1) etc etc

Plenty of managers have faced similar situations with much more influential personalities and managed to turn it around. If the manager didn't believe he could find a way to use Targett or keep him happy until the summer, then that's fine. Let's not pretend it's because it's such an impossible thing to do though.

They've probably bought two players that we'd want anywhere near our team - Guimares, and Trippier (who's been out for months and only made 4 appearances). I don't think anyone would have been crying out for Dan Burn or Chris Wood in our team

They spent more than we did in Jan, but it's still a squad more cheaply assembled than ours, with them massively overpaying for recent signings, most of whom we wouldn't want, and they've leapfrogged us. Maybe some credit, or discredit is due to the coaches involved.

I think you are right....but they are effective and its no good crying when they are effective and are instrumental in gathering points.

you could say about, Dawson at West Ham, would we have signed him?, not likely, but he does a job to decent effect....some of these players who seem average joes....play a huge part in the complete team.

That's a part of our problem, we keep signing footballers, when we need some effective players....sure they need some skill, but we miss the bits they do well, sometimes the ugly bits.

In the ideal world and higher up the food chain....They have footballers who are effective like Rodri at Man city, Fabinho at Liverpool....but in transition we have sacrificed "effective" for "cosmetic" to some degree, more interested in " on the eye"

It's not a mistake if the player asks for the move and clearly doesn't want to be here.

We had to upgrade cdm position, for a team aiming for a mid table position Matty Target is a fine Left Back
