By getting 2 players of close to equal quality for each position and then we will have competition. Having 2 players that have a big gulf in class in their respective abilities is not having competition for places as one will simply be backup

Digne isn't exactly the Messi of left backs, he's a good player but he's not an elite player.

I am not suggesting he is but the gulf in class between him and Targett make Targett a backup LB and not genuine competition for the LB position

If we can't expect people to try and fight for their places against seemingly superior competition, how exactly are we supposed to build a squad with "2 quality players at every position"?

That’s the challenge. We are probably not a big enough pull yet for good players to be happy sitting on the bench. Having said that, we already have some very good players on our bench, particularly in midfield and attack.

That's a completely unrealistic expectation. How many clubs in the world genuinely have that? How many that aren't even able to offer European football?

No problem with Matt Targett from me, he wants game time and should be lauded for that when so many others are happy to sit on contracts without contributing.

Realistically we aren’t paying £25m + wages for a ready made PL left back just to give Targett a chance, no matter how much people say “he should fight for his place”, as soon as Digne came in Targett was never going to get a look in regardless so he might as well leave now. If he does well for Newcastle hopefully it keeps his transfer value high for when we inevitably cash in.

The “2 quality players at every position” is a bit of a fallacy. If we were in Europe we could rotate, but if it’s just the league and the occasional early round of the cups then there just isn’t enough games to come close to satisfying that many quality players, if they all have the right mentality.

Look at the problems signing Ings caused with trying to accommodate him and Watkins, it got our last manager sacked. Of course we need options and competition in the squad, but there’s the need for the right balance. There’s nothing wrong with having key players who are clearly first choice where rotation would difficult to achieve or even just disruptive

I disagree and lots of clubs have 2 players of similar quality for positions. My post says to have two players of close to equal ability and not two players that are elite players. The is the only way possible to get competition for places. Anything else is just a backup player

Would you really say there’s a ‘gulf in class’ between Targett and Digne?

I’d say Digne is an upgrade… but gulf in class is a bit of an exaggeration.

Name 5 clubs that have two players of close to equal ability in every position.

Wouldn’t be surprised if a few more players wanted out in summer. The one with the least game time of Watkins and Ings, possibly Bailey if he ends up second fiddle to Buendia, definitely Mings if Gerrard brings in a high profile CB. Maintaining depth will remain difficult unless you can offer perks like ridiculous wages, guaranteed trophies or european football.

Birmingham City, all the players are the same ability and all officially classified as shit! 😉😂

As someone else said LB is somewhat specialised with not a lot of rotation though

The 2 players in competition thing I'd expect to be more like what we'll hopefully have at RB with Kesler potentially coming through, a young guy pushing him for his place

Not a guy who's older, more experienced and better, completely agree that Targett and Digne is not a competition

Not the brightest eh?

He always strikes me as a bit of a village idiot. I’ve got nothing against him but I’m glad we have upgraded our left back position. Hopefully we can screw Newcastle for a King’s ransom for him in the summer.

Add the Baggies to that too. They have even carried the philosophy through to the management teams and have Bruce and Brucie bonus Alex Bruce

Yeah, I agree, different positions need to be treated somewhat differently and absolutely agree about Kesler coming through, that is the ideal.
