Popular Post Brumerican
As mentioned previously Stan Staunton wasn't quick but had the sweetest of left foots and was comfortable in possession . I'd happily take another Stan. Edited June 29, 2019 by Brumerican
sharkyvilla
My brother is a Saints fan and says he's quite good. His pace on Football Manager is 13 which is fine. I'm not sure we will set up the team with wing backs, we just need someone behind El Ghazi who is fairly solid and with ability on the ball. Being lightning quick isn't a necessity in that sort of system.

He likes players who are not afraid of the ball and comfortable on it. Targett fits this criteria. Jota the same, remains to be seen if he can step up but again, not afraid of the ball, good ability on it. Players been signed now to suit a style of play instead of the shotgun approach of years gone by. Amen.

I think maybe 6 or 7 that are good enough to start in the top flight. Problem is 3 of the 7 don’t play for us. Anyway good to see the rebuild continuing. TRO
I too see a trend from Dean to move towards a player with a first touch....its part of the evolution, we need.
KenjiOgiwara
I think 11 million with additional 6 million as clauses is kinda alright. It's more than I'd like, but those 6 million will be tied to PL survival, national caps, etc. and if that happens he's been worth the money any way. I suspect a lot of our transfers will be with pretty big money tied to clauses about survival. Thus a lot of signings might sound financially worse than they are. And to be honest I would be way more annoyed if we signed Che Adams for 15 million than our rumoured bid for target Edited June 29, 2019 by KenjiOgiwara
Wezbid
Would people prefer a pacey left back whose final ball is poor, can't pick out a tough pass to a player in a dangerous position but still looks good bombing up and down the line or someone a bit slower who can whip in a good cross, doesn't treat the ball like a hot potato and who not only can accurately thread a ball through to players but actually spot the through ball in the first place. Anyone who can do it all and has proper pace will cost £40+. I'm not getting hung up on him having epic pace when he's got a lot more to his game that will fit in with other players in the team. If we were a counter attacking team relying on over-lapping fullbacks then I'd be a bit more concerned but I suspect we'll be wanting to try and have more of the possession apart from against the top teams who it's really difficult stopping them having the majority of the ball. KentVillan
Anyone who thinks £14m* is overpaying for a 23-year-old with proven Premier League quality specialising in one of our weakest positions is still living in the nineties. This is a par price for any half-decent player at this level. My only concern with Targett is he's already missed a whole season with a hamstring injury. Not an expert on this, but pingy hamstrings seem to be something that only get worse with age, and either lead to a lot of time out of action, or playing within themselves to protect it. I still think he'll turn out to be a useful signing, and we have Neil Taylor and Kourtney Hause as backup options if he does get injured, so it's not that big a risk. (edit: or £11m or £17m including add-ons... whatever it is) Edited June 29, 2019 by KentVillan
Keyblade
Yup that's LB sorted now. Targett, Hause and Taylor are more than fine for the PL.
Johnnyp
No issue with the fee at all. When you consider Bournemouth have paid 13 million for a left back from Bristol City who couldn't even nail a regular slot last season. Yes, Kelly is young, potential etc but bigger risk imo. Targett has good experience. Played some games at this level and still young.

dont_do_it_doug.
I'm fine with it. I haven't seen him play much in the Premier League, though he was very good for Fulham in the Championship, so if this is the guy they want them I'm glad we've got him. At this stage I have to trust the process. If they're operating as they should they will be targetting very specific attributes. Until they prove they can't do that then I'm all for whatever they fancy. I don't think our full backs need rapid pace given how we play, btw. It would be a nice thing to have, but it's more important they are comfortable in possession, tactically astute and able to whip one in when needed. Yep. We loooove knocking the ball around at the back, for various reasons. Being able to control the ball is super important for a Villa defender. As is being able to ping one between the lines.

Stockport_Villain
The one thing I’ve quickly learnt is that Smith and Co know what they are doing. We now coach and improve players so I’m very comfortable with this. Look forward to seeing him in the pre-season friendlies.
